Makeup professionally done or do it myself?

STBMrsMartin, on July 18, 2019 at 9:57 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 19

Hello ladies, so I wasn't going to hire a makeup artist originally bc I love doing my own, and I am very picky about my eyes. I have had bad experiences in the past with makeup artists doing it wrong the day of events (Prom etc) and me crying and removing it and barely having time to redo it. Luckily they do trails now for weddings so we can figure out what I like.

I am mostly concerned about my makeup staying on, I have super duper oily skin, I do good on a regular day with my routine to keep it from getting crazy or melting off but I'm inside in an office building...my wedding is outside...grant you it will be in Oct (hopefully not as humid as it is now here in FL in July or as hot) but I still would like to know that my foundation and all is going to stick (and I'm a crier LOL). Are there any recommendations on what kind of makeup to use if I hire someone, spray, brands, stuff for super oily skin....I am sure I can probably find a makeup artist that will let me do my eyes myself...maybe? I just don't know. Any recommendations?

A good MUA will definitely be able to do makeup that lasts. It's less likely that you'll find someone who will let you do your own eyes, though. A lot of vendors know that the final result is their best advertisement, and they may not want you doing such a big part of the makeup yourself and having their name attached to it (like if it's not their style or up to their standard). My vote: take to Instagram and search wedding-related makeup hashtags in your area, and find an artist who has done work that you like. Then do a trial. If they're local, they'll know how to work around the heat and humidity.

I would do it yourself! I'm very similar to you, I have extremely oily skin and it has taken me YEARS of trying different makeup products to find what keeps me matte for 8 hours. I got my makeup done for my engagement photos and let her use what she wanted and it was a TERRIBLE idea, my skin was oily before we even started the pictures. I seriously debated doing my makeup myself for my wedding but my eye makeup doesn't always turn out perfect so I worried that with extra pressure on my wedding day it wouldn't end up perfect. So I found a different makeup artist to do a trial with. She truly understood oily skin and was able to use the right products and did my eye makeup exactly how I like it. Although she did a great job, if I was better with eyemakeup I would have done it myself

I’m the same! Every time I had MU professionally done for photoshoots etc. I would end up correcting it or adding something to it lol. I wear MU on regular basis but not a full face. I’m not good in crazy contouring or super involved eye makeup with 5 different eye shadows, but I don’t like those very over the top looks anyway & want to do my own thing.
For my wedding I will do my own MU. I don’t have super oily skin but for long lasting & full coverage, I’d recommend Tarte Face Tape foundation & Shape Tape concealer - after you put finishing powder on top, these two products don’t move! They also have Tarte Shape Tape Matte foundation that’s especially for oily skin. I haven’t tried it but if it’s anything like the other two, I’m sure it would work well. And of course finishing powder is super important. I use Mac Blot powder - it’s for oil control & great for photos because it doesn’t give that horrible white reflection when flash is used.

Take my advice and do it your self. I had a trial which went well but I'm very particular with my eyes as well. But I felt very pale yet she covered up my pimples to look like they weren't there. I'm in the process of figuring out what make up I will be using for the day. I never had good experiences with MUA's. MAC studio fluid fix is for oily skin i believe.

I'm in the same situation! I think I'm going to end up doing my own. Everytime I go to events and "do it up" with my face, I seem to get compliments. Also, my engagement photos turned out well, so I might go for it so I don't end up in that rush to fix it situation like you describe!

I have combination skin, extra oily in the summer. Literally the only thing that will keep my face intact for HOURS is Ben Nye Finishing Spray. I live and die by this and will be using it on my day to keep my face on. It keeps my makeup from transferring as well which will be a big deal that day.

Thank you everyone for your advice, I think I am going to do it myself. I just don’t trust anyone not to mess it up when I love doing my makeup. I will def try some of these products mentioned. I have been wanting to try the Ben Nye spray, any other suggestions? I’ve been testing different products and so far I have a few I love but still know I haven’t tried. Def don’t want transfer and right now that is a huge issue as well as the oil.

As a makeup artist, I can tell that you're probably someone who should do your own makeup. Based on what you said about past experiences and being particular about your eyes etc. You don’t want to end up crying on your wedding day and end up doing it yourself anyway. In the mean time research and try samples of products to help with the longevity. Some non negotiable items include eyeshadow primer (I use urban decay primer potion on clients) and face primer for oily skin (Becca’s ever matte poreless primer is great). Be sure to use a good foundation made for long wear. I personally like Estée Lauder double wear foundation but on clients I use RCMA cream foundation which is great too. Set everything with non spf powder and have a compact nearby for occasional touch ups to absorb any surface oil—I’d recommend Laura Mercier translucent powder. Also find a good waterproof mascara and eyeliner that works well with your eyes. Good luck!

Thank you Bianca, I actually absolutely love the Becca Ever Matte Poreless Primer, I just recently discovered it by an awesome guy who worked at Sephora. I just bought my second tube. I also started using Fenty by Rhianna..it is the only thing that has stuck to my face in a while. Thank you so much for your recommendations. I just wanted to save myself the trouble of getting upset when I know its happened in the past, its the last day you want to have something like that go wrong. My FSIL recommended the Sephora Airbrush makeup, I bought it to try...thought I'd see how it works since I'm sampling to find the right thing. I def plan on having an emergency kit for makeup only LOL

Perfect! You sound prepared! And I’m the same way and will probably do my own makeup for the wedding as well. Just give yourself lots of time on the day so you can enjoy it and allow for extra time in case you have shaky hands from lack of sleep/ excess caffeine/ nerves etc. I know I could easily spend 2 hours on my makeup lol

Oh yes ma'am I will, and being the perfectionist I am, I'm sure I'll have to wipe off a few spots and redo a few LOL I know I'm going to have to work on the emotional part, I'm a crier...so that's my biggest hurdle, lashes I'm not worrying about, it redoing my face over and over and over bc I wipe too much hahaha

I find keeping a couple q-tips nearby before the ceremony helps to absorb those tears before they leave your eye. When I have a bride that starts crying after her makeup is applied I just take the q-tip to the inside and outside corner of her eye and that helps quite a bit. Of course if you cry during the ceremony you can do your best to blot tears with a tissue or hankie. Try to avoid wiping if you can. You’d be surprised how well your makeup will last even with a few tears dripping down but once you start wiping that will do the most damage.

Yeah I'm a wiper, I have been trying to train myself to blot lately, even with sweat, but so far the blotting when I sweat is working. I am helping my parent move (they bought a new house during all this...they are nuts LOL) so I'm helping them...and I was sweating like crazy (I live in Florida) and I went to the bathroom and I looked in the mirror and I just knew it was bad...and it was actually still there with sweat on top beaded up but not smearing...I was in shock.

I would suggest referencing YouTube videos. There are tons of bridal artists who give tutorials online and list the products that they use. You can usually get samples of makeup products in store or online to try before the big day. I’m doing my own makeup - I’m buying my products based on those kinds of videos.

I’m doing my own makeup but getting eyelash extensions a few days before. This is hopefully going to save time on the wedding day and I won’t have mascara smears from crying haha.

I am very similar to you. Makeup is my art therapy I like it how I do it. In fact I had a trial yesterday and I hated it. There was nothing wow about it, it transferred to everything I touched, and worst of all...it was NOT waterproof or smudge proof. And I have all of the products she used. Needless to say I will be doing my own makeup. Don’t even waste your money on a trial.

My wedding is in 6 weeks, I have decided not to even have a trial. Instead I bought and have been trying to find ways to do my own. I have found it perfect style. Makeup as you said Alexis is my therapy I love doing it and trying new things. I actually have decided to use my Fenty products then I found my own spray waterproof makeup from Sephora and the setting spray. First I use my fenty then I spray over the airbrush makeup and touch up my flaws. It worked perfectly!! Stays all day!! Doesn’t come off or transfer and looks flawless!!!! Even in the humidity. I may need to only go over with a light powder brush once or twice but other than that I am def doing my own after playing with so much!! I’m glad someone else understands!!! Good luck and best wishes ❤️
