Makeup Trial Fail

Shannon, on May 31, 2022 at 7:22 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 8
Hello All,
I had my makeup trial and it was a failure. I’ve had my makeup done a handful of times in my life and it never comes out the way I describe or like. The artist tends not to listen to direction and does their own thing. Now, I’m thinking of doing my own which I didn’t want to deal with the pressure of it coming out right. Or, go back and have her do only my eyes with the color I specified. I really don’t want to find another MUA as my MOH is having her hair done at this salon close to the venue.
The first pic is inspiration that I showed MUA with pink, bronze and lavender colors. The second Is the result with brownish blush and brownish/bronze eyeshadow. The face makeup was so caked on, it accentuated my wrinkles. Hence the cropped face because I look like Frankenstein’s Bride. At the end, I told the MUA a few things that I didn’t like, but felt bad to pick apart the entire face.
Does anyone have the same issue with MUA and any advice? Makeup Trial Fail 1Makeup Trial Fail 2

Not every makeup artist refuses to listen. Browse Instagram for your area and schedule a trial with any whose style you like and who you click with during your consultation. That doesn’t require you to book them until you are happy with them. Sometimes that means you have to meet with 2 or 3 before you find the right one. Also, don’t leave the trial until you are happy with the service, unless it’s truly horrible.

Did the MUA have examples of previous brides and just did not achieve that type of look?

You might try to get airbrushed makeup for a lighter foundation.

Maybe you could get a better trial if you first ask how that MUA would achieve the look you are interested in and maybe how the MUA would vary the look. Also, some MUA will ask for a natural picture of you so they have a better idea of the starting point.

Usually MUAs use a heavier application when applying "regular" makeup for weddings so it doesn't get washed out with camera flashes, spotlights, etc. If the MUA you worked with offers airbrush and you have the budget to do another trial with them, I'd ask for one and just explain that the makeup they used felt too heavy after you wore it around for a bit and that you didn't like how the colors they used looked in different lights. Hopefully it's an easy fix!

My gf who is a makeup artist in Chicago recently posted her most requested bridal look with a breakdown of how to ask your own MUA (below). Sorry, no tips on foundation. Maybe an egg -shaped applicator will help with lines?Makeup Trial Fail 3

    Good luck.

    Thanks Michelle. That is helpful.

Think I’m going to have the MUA do my eyes only in different colors and the rest myself. She did use an egg shaped applicator, but there were way too many layers.
