If you are requiring that they get the make-up done professionally and/or insisting on a certain look, it's expected that you pay. If it's optional for them, then it's ok for them to cover the costs.

Hi Sylvie. If you are requiring your bridesmaids to get their makeup done professionally, you need to pay for it. However, if you’re allowing them the option of professional services or to do their own makeup, it’s fine to have them pay if they choose to use the service. Just make sure you let them know the cost up front so they can make the decision.

Its definitely optional if they want to use the make up artist you provide. I would tell them the cost upfront. I was paying for mines bc I wanted everyone to have the same look.

As long as you don’t tell them they have to get their makeup professionally done or to wear their makeup a certain way, then you do not have to pay for their makeup. When you make it a requirement, that’s when you should be responsible for the bill.

I made it 100% optional for my BMs. I told them it was optional and that if they chose to get it done it would be at their own cost. I am requiring, if they do choose to get it done, that they use the make-up artist that I chose- only because they are traveling to the venue so we can get ready on-site. It would be WAY to crowded to have another artist there and I wouldn't be comfortable with them getting it done off-site because anything could happen and they may not make it back in time.

That being said: if it's optional, you need to be 100% comfortable knowing that some may choose to not get it done. I'm okay with that and I let them all know.

I think you only need to if you're requiring them to do something specific beyond asking "please wear a neutral lipstick" or whatever. Such as, if you're requiring them to have their makeup be professionally done.

I’m paying because we’re all having a certain look that the makeup artist I hired is going to do. I didn’t feel right making them pay for that

It depends on the person money situation. It can considered as a gift though.

I’ve been a bridesmaid plenty of times, and I prefer to do my own makeup anyways. However you can always offer the services and give the bridesmaids the price! It’s a great way to save money too!

If you're requiring it, you pay. If it's optional, you give them the cost and they decide. The only issue is that a lot of artists will have minimums to travel to your location, so if everyone opts out you may not be able to get them to travel.

I would give them the option to also get the services done if you’re doing it professionally but you wouldn’t pay for that if they decide yes
