Makeup/hair Pricing

Emily, on April 16, 2020 at 12:38 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 7
I am getting married October 24, 2020, and I have recently started seriously looking at makeup/hair stylists.. I know I’m pretty late doing so, but I’m getting married in a small town that has multiple salons that do bridal makeup/hair so I figured I’m somewhat safe, lol. Anyway, most of these salons don’t have websites so I can’t look at portfolios or pricing online; however, one salon has their pricing listed online, and OMG it‘s expensive! For just 1-3 people, they charge a $180 booking fee to secure the appointment, but it doesn’t even go towards whatever service you’d get. For 4-6 people it’d be $350 (which I guess you could split and have it be $58-$88/person, but still). This would be in addition to the $300+ spent on hair & makeup. Is this booking fee (not going towards services) pretty common for MUA/hair stylists to charge? (I’d be fine paying a non-refundable deposit if I knew it’d go towards the cost of my services, but an extra fee just to book?....)

For my wedding In Northern California, I had separate $100 deposits for MU and hair. Hair for BMs is $70 each and my hair is $100. My MU is $150 and BM makeup is $80.
I don’t understand why they would have you pay a booking fee? That was never the case with the vendors i talked with.

Paying a deposit that doesn’t go toward the cost of services is definitely not the standard.

For My Hair & Makeup its A Total Of $385. Which Had To Be Paid in order To Book. For My BM's That Are Having Theirs Done It'll Be $180 And Both And $85 For Either Makeup Or Hair.

Any Deposit Should Usually Go Towards Your Final Payment. You Can Always Email Some Places And Get A Quote. I Got About 5 Quotes Before Making My Decision.

Paying a deposit that does not go towards the final total is odd. However, the overall cost otherwise is very reasonable! Reach out to other HMU artist in your area and ask for pricing. You may find most others will put your deposit towards your total.

For me, I had the option to pay all hair and makeup up front (didn't make sense because every girl has the option to do HMU and is paying for herself) or pay a $150 deposit that doesn't go toward anything but reserves the date. That's what I ended up doing.

K, may I ask you which MUA/hair stylist you decided to go with? I too will be getting married in Northern California in October (on a different day from you, lol)

Thanks everyone for your input. I thought it was a little strange that the booking fee wouldn't be considered a deposit for this particular vendor, glad I'm not the only one to think so!
