Making a strapless dress with straps???

May2010Bride, on January 30, 2010 at 8:45 AM Posted in Planning 0 17

I fell in love "by chance" with my dress. I work at JCPenney and two months ago, in the middle of winter, someone returned a prom dress style gown in a beautiful, unique gray (Called gun metal LOL). Since it was out of season I got it for 25.00 by the time my discount was applied and all. But it is strapless and I need to at least get straps on it. My son is 5 and I'm sure the dress WILL get stepped on and I'm not very comfortable with strapless (not much on top to hold it up per say). So...any ideas? The color is so unique that I bought about 7 different spools of gray ribbon in the past 2 months hoping it would match....which it didn't and I spent more time returning ribbon then anything else. My FH's aunt suggested to take some off the bottom to make sleeves/straps but I am not a seamstress and really don't want to screw it up. Any other ideas?? Thanks.

Try a broad ribbon that is close to the same color and put rhinestones or beading on them to make straps. The beading will distract from the color.

Maybe use a coordinating color for the straps. Can you post a pic of the dress? That might help me come up with some more ideas.

I would suggest taking it to a seamstress. It's a big day & you don't want to accidently show your ta-tas

Does the dress have a petticoat? I added straps to my dress, found the matching organza at a fabric store and had the alterations ladies add a loose off-the-shoulder straps. It made the dress look 100 times better. Just keep looking, but definitely have a specialist work on the straps (they might even be able to dye to match).

How about the clear straps. You can probably get a seamstress to put them in.

A seamstress can sew a bra into it just to keep that as an option. Also you could use like crystal straps and have those either on the bra or on the dress directly.

Is there a lining in the dress? If so, cut some strips off the bottom of the inner lining and make straps out of that.... that way the color will be the same. If there's no lining, I agree with Carla, go with crystal straps of some kind so they match any color.

You can find the crystal straps in almost any bra department. If you want something a little more subtle you could also have the straps made from an iridescent organza which comes in ribbon form from a craft store.

I would suggest finding a seamstress as well. Don't go to a big shop, find a solo working on their own. Check craigslist. I am sure they could do that for less than $50 and then it will look professionally done and you'll have no worries.

I'd go find a seamstress who knows what she's doing. If you want to save money I agree with Brandi, find someone who works independently.

Thank you ALL for your suggestions...there is no lining of the dress...just a netting underneath. There ARE extra beads/crystals with the dress and my idea was to use ribbon and then add the crystals myself.....but all the grays are way off and really stood out (even as an underneath to the crystals/beads).I DO like the idea of the crystal straps...I didn't even know they made those and maybe that is even something i can do myself if I find ones that look good with it. Below are two pic of the dress.

What are the other colours of your wedding? Maybe you could pull one of those colours and add to the dress and not even try to match it. Otherwise I like the crystal straps as posted above.

My other colors are red (tied in mainly with roses) and black...the bouquets I made are wrapped in black ribbon. I think I will be buying some sort of black shoes to go with the dress since I know I will not find this particular color and I really want comfy shoes...maybe even a fancy flip-flop deal.

Stuff the top with the skin color ta ta inserts. either you can sew them into the dress or actually wear them as directed. this will eliminate slip and enhance your bust to fit the gown better.

What are "ta ta inserts" and where can they be purchased at?

If the dress is fitted properly you shouldn't have to worry about it falling off - even without sleeves.

It does fit well enough....but I don't want any "accidents" knowing that my 5 YO will be at my heels all day and I REALLY don't want to end up on YouTube b/c of a dress malfunction......LOL.....Sadly enough I could see that happening b/c it is my kinda luck!!!!
