Making engagement ring look bigger with stackable rings?

I dont want my fiance to shell out a ton of money on a ring but i will admit i want a large stone. So i was looking at a solitary ring and getting a large carat GEMSTONE!! 3-5 carat's. I think it might look odd for a large stone on a small band so i wondered about separably buying simple stackable rings to add to each side. Does that sound like a bad idea or has anyone done it before?

setting possibly....

If size is important to you, i think you should get a 3ct non diamond gem stone rather than having your ering next to big stackable bands. it will make the center stone smaller?

Hey y'all, it does say she wants a gemstone or a rose quarts Smiley winking

But still.... thats HUGE! I personally wouldn't want to wear something that huge all the time!

But, hey... to each their own.

Pick out your engagement ring first, then find bands to match. I wouldn't think of wedding bands until you know exactly what your e-ring is like. As for stackable with stones though, I think it kind of detracts from a solitaire. I have a diamond solitaire e-ring and I paired it with a plain white gold wedding band. I love it! Keeps the main diamond the star of the show Smiley winking

Mine is a little over 2.5 ct center stone and over 3.5 total ( the wedding band I was just trying it on.. I don't know what I'm picking yet) count and looks pretty big on me and I have really big ugly hands!! I honestly don't know how much he paid but a 5ct diamond will probably cost or FH over 50k. I mean if you like the look and your FH can afford it do what makes you happy!

I know having a ruby instead of a diamond made my e-ring cost more. So my ruby is little, but I have child hands so it's perfect.

ETA: Stackable rings do make the center stone look smaller.

Have you looked into ring enhancers? It won't increase the size of the main stone, but will definitely add sparkle in general. If you are going that big, definitely go gemstone route.

I actually like a thin band. I think that makes it look bigger.

If you want more width, you could go with an arrangement like this. Even without the little stones on the stacking bands, it would be really pretty.

ETA: sorry, since I'm on the mobile app I wasn't able to click the links you posted

You don't what him to "shell out a lot of money on a ring" but you want "large carat gemstone 3-5 carat's". Read what you said...he IS going to shell out a lot of money for a diamond that big!!

ETA: you said gemstone...so I'm hoping you don't mean diamond, if so you can find a large gemstone for a decent price.

My diamond is 1.98 carats. Which is significantly cheaper than a 2.0 carat ring. Going up to the next whole number drastically increases the price of the diamond. You should speak with a jeweler about finding a diamond like that for you. Also if you want it to appear bigger, have the setting raised up. A lower set diamond will appear smaller.

I understand what you are all saying but i will repeat what some said. I am looking at a rose quartz NOT a diamond. I have fat fingers and dont want a dainty ring to make me feel bad every time i look at my ring i will not be thinking how pretty the ring is. My boyfriend knows how much of a planner and perfectionist i am and just wants me to see what i want and let him know. Everyone is different that's what makes us unique and us...

My e-ring was picked out specifically as part of a set. i suggest going that route.

word of warning about a larger stone thin band that i didnt take into account - if the band is too dainty, the ring will spin like crazy from the weight of the stone. im getting my e-ring and wedding band soldered together after the wedding to stop it from happening so much, but it does kinda drive me nuts right now.

My fiancé and I were originally looking at gemstones as well. Because of budget and also because I like things different. (I thought I'd like a vintage looking ring.) But we ended up finding natural uncut diamond rings. They are sooooo much cheaper than cut diamonds. I love the look and originality of it. It still sparkles! I'd post a picture but I had the band redone because it was thinner than I expected. I can't wait to get it back!

If you're interested, check out Gemologies on etsy.com. Kristan, the shop owner/jeweler is a dream to work with! My ring is 1.56 carats and my fiancé and I were very comfortably happy with the price. It was also custom made. I showed her elements I liked from her rings and she made it! I'm sure if you talked to her she could get bigger diamonds.

    Best of luck to you!

PS. I like the stackable ring look as well. Different occasions need different looks.

Budget was really important to me when we started talking about getting engaged. I ended up deciding on morganite because I wanted rose gold and thought it looked nice, plus it is super affordable. That sad - expect to clean something that isn't a diamond a lot more frequently! I have a diamond solitaire right hand ring and it is clean and sparkling FOREVER, whereas my morganite gets cloudier more quickly (super easy to clean, though, so I'm not upset) so keep that in mind.

But! I would just worry about the ring for now and then find the wedding band later. That's what I did and we were still able to find a perfect fit for it Smiley smile I think a diamond band like this make it a bit blingier Smiley smile
