Making my own invites. Don't know where to begin. Please help

Lonyah, on August 6, 2011 at 9:49 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

I have no DIY projects. The theme for my wedding is vintage. I have been quoted some ridiculous prices for invites, so I decided to do it myself. I have a invitation that I want to use. But from there I'm lost. I know nothing about print, stationary. I just have a sample invite and a dream. Can anyone help?

I got my invitations from this website:

    http://www.weddingbellinvitations.com/wedding_invitation_kits

I ordered 60, and they came out to be able $65...they were really easy to print.

If you are still wanting to DIY, hobby lobby has awesome stationary and overlays, and also stamps with all kinds of different designs.

    I used

    www.cardsandpockets.com

for my holders, and bought card stock from my local paper store. each of my invites with out postage but with matching envelopes came out to be 1.10 for the entire thing.. I spent many nights at work cutting and gluing them together but I think they were worth it.

Hi Lonyah, I made STDs & plan to make invitations. I started out with a color palette that I had in mind. Then I went to Michael's (any craft store with stationary would do.) You could easily scour the clearance aisles at any craft store or Target or Walmart & stock up on premade, customizable invitations. Most of the time those can be a little pricey, but you can catch them in the clearance aisle for a fraction of the normal retail price. I used the Recollections line of blank flat cards & envelopes at Michaels. I used the pearlized gold ones for the STD announcement and my invitation. I got stock paper to embellish the invite with a different pattern. I also added some flowers (which I hot glued) & little pearl embellishments. For the invitations, I am incorporating ribbon as well. I actually will be harvesting envelopes and cardstock I got from an invitation kit from Target for $10 on clearance. I used photo glue sticks to prevent rippling & a template off of Word to "word" them.

Look online for store coupons at places like retailmenot.com. I have never paid full price for anything at stores like AC Moore or Michael's. Smiley smile

Vistaprint also has great deals and a lot of the time, there are deep discounts or FREE things that you can get as well.

The bottom line is don't pay full price for anything-whether you are totally DIY or using a service.

The cost of an invitation depends on the printing method, paper and style your choose. Letterpress invitations and invitations with raised ink or lots of embellishments and fancy cuts and folds cost more to produce than simpler designs. I recommend finding a consultant in your area who can assist you. There are many custom stationers right here on WW who offer affordable design services. I offer custom digital products, which are more cost-effective than traditionally printed invitations, or assistance in finding the right DIY materials to make your project a breeze.

I got my DIY invitation kits from Michael's -- only had to fight with my printer a wee bit but everyone's raving about them and there were plenty of designs to choose from, so I'm sure they have ones with vintage flair. Jo-Ann Fabrics and A.C. Moore also have kits. Good luck!

I remember your posting about the 3k invites, that was a bit ridiculous. Let me know if I can help you with a design for a better price than you have been previously quoted. Good luck with michaels and target.

I am also doing a vintage themed wedding and tied in with that is love birds. I went on Etsy and typed in "vintage wedding invitations." You would not believe what they have on there for inspiration!! And just about every listing I have ever seen on there tells you the exact materials they use and how they did it. So I am using an idea off of there. She wanted almost $500 for 75 invites and response cards... I am spending a whopping $56... that includes paper, ink, ribbon, stamp, and inks to stamp myself. Good luck girl!!
