Making my own wedding cake? Crazy?

So this might be crazy but I am considering making my own wedding cake. For some reason I can't stand the thought of paying $500 for a cake. I will have no more than 130 guests (and that is with a 100% attendance rate)…. I know my baking skills and decorating skills...that is not what I am worried...

I know my baking skills and decorating skills...that is not what I am worried about. However, i have never constructed a cake (3 tier). I know all the tools I need but I don't want something to be loose and then my cake crashes. lol.

Now, someone tell me I am crazy for thinking about doing this myself…. OR tell me you have done it (or plan on doing it) and it will be just fine.

Thoughts please Smiley smile

It sounds to hectic and stressful to me. Plus, how much money are you going to end up spending on supplies to bake and decorate a 3 tiered cake? Add the headache of worrying about getting it done and turning out well, I would just pay a baker.

I catered my own wedding, and I was a pro caterer at the time, with a certified kitchen and a full staff. I would never do it again. The catering that is, not the marrying.

I don't doubt your ability to do so, HOWEVER....

I decided to make my own cupcakes. Let me just say that the few days before the wedding I was working on them, I was cursing myself for decided to do so. So keep that in mind. It might seem like a GREAT idea now, but you don't know what kinds of stresses will befall you when it's actually time to bake it.

I say pay to get it done, lol.

I didn't want the stress, and didn't have the time or kitchen/fridge space. Instead, I made the gum paste flowers and affixed them to the cake (that a bakery made) before the wedding. It looked beautiful and I didn't have the extra cost for Fancy flowers. The other option would be to make a fake cake (styrofoam tiers, decorated how you want) and then get a sheet cake for serving. You could get the middle bit done if you want to live cut. But yes, making your own cake is a recipe for disaster.

I agree with We'llAlwaysHaveParis; it's doable, but you might want to have cakes that don't require stacking. Here are some inspiration options:

I wanted to. Everyone called me crazy. I wish i had stuck with my gut because the baker is doing an upcharge for making icing snowflakes instead of roses and i know snowflakes are easier to make. I'm pretty aggrivated about having let myself get talked out of it.

Your venue may not allow an unlicensed vendor to bring food in. Just something to consider.

What if you made a much smaller cake for show? And then prepare sheet cakes that will be what the guests actually receive. There is less pressure and you can still have the beautiful cake you want, only maybe it will serve 10, not 130.

If you think you can do it, go for it. It will add more stress, but it will save you a lot of money. I guess weigh your options.

This was a cake the bride made at my FH's cousin's wedding a couple yrs ago. She isn't a professional baker.

Thank you for all the advice!

I found a private baker, who is cutting me a deal because I am being referred from my co-worker, and the baker is my co-worker's husband's mother's best friend Smiley tongue

For 130 people? I will absolutely say you are crazy.

I'm having barely 20 guests, and I'm 40-ish cupcakes - I've been practicing since the beginning of the year, and my wedding is in Feb. Cupcake supplies are less expensive than cake supplies, less baking havoc....

Cakes take longer to decorate, need more supplies. And trust me, the amount of supplies you'll be buying (if you want them to look professional) honestly, you'll be getting up there in $$$, plus the hours of work, it might be worth it to just leave it to a baker.

But if you're really deadset on doing it, you need practice, practice, and more practice. Draw designs and try them out. Practice your piping, or whatever way you're going to decorate the cake. Practice with different flavors or icing, different food colorings....

All I'm saying is, if you want a cake like the pros, you have to bake like the pros.

My friend did this. The cake was stunning, but she spent about 5 hours the day before and time the day of decorating it. She didn't want to stack it until that morning. It was way more stress than necessary.
