Making the Dress myself

Kelly, on April 28, 2020 at 1:01 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 11

Smiley atonished I am nervous about making my own wedding dress, however I have dreamed of making it since I was a little girl. My best friend's mom is helping me and she has been making clothes longer than I have been alive. I am not going with a classic white or ivory. I am going with a soft morning dove gray. Am I taking the right course? We are making all the bridesmaids dresses and groomsmen vests as well. I love to sew and craft. I am just really nervous. Maybe just looking for confidence boosting good vibes and cheery words.

I personally do not have any experience with this nor could I imagine doing this for my wedding. I wanted everyone to look their best so I never would have trusted anyone to make my wedding dress or bridesmaids dresses. I also couldn't imagine having such a big project on my plate in addition to everything else I had to do for the wedding and my normal life. My mother-in-law did make our flower girls dresses because my husband insisted on letting her because she offered to. We had a ton of arguments about it because she tends to procrastinate, but she did manage to get the dresses done. She has been sewing for 40+ years and she had made a wedding dress previously. She said that making formal wear is a lot more challenging than every day clothing. I picked a rather simple pattern for the dresses. She ended up not being able to completely finish them until the night before the wedding because the dresses ended up needing alterations and the girls live 7+ hours from where our wedding was. My husband's aunt also wanted to make her own wedding dress, but she didn't have enough time and ended up wearing the bottom half of her dress with a button down white shirt because she only got skirt part done. My advice is if this is something you really want to do that you have leave extra time for yourself. I would also start off with making one bridesmaid dress and vest to make sure you like how they turn out before making anymore.

Veronica thank you for the advice, I have made the dress that we have chosen for the bridesmaids before. It is a classic 1950's vintage style and I am going to do the same dress most likely I am getting ready to begin a mock up of the dress I might use and I haven't yet decided between the two. I am so glad that other people do this and I am not some strange little oddball. It makes me really happy to hear and I really appreciate it.Smiley flower

You definitely aren't the first to make your own wedding dress or other dresses for a wedding. I hope it all works out like you are imagining. Unfortunately the flower girl dresses my mother-in-law made looked nothing like what I wanted. A lot of it was because she didn't use enough tulle because she felt the pattern called for too much tulle. I ended up having the girls wear petticoats, which they thankfully already had, otherwise the dresses would have had no shape to them.

I was going to take the same path as you and make my own dress. But I still wanted to experience dress shopping and of course fell in love with one. So I am no longer going to make mine. BUT there are lots of bride's who have and have blogs about how they did it. Just take your time and it turn out great! I am doing all of our dress alterations to save money on the cost.

Thank you! I was engaged before so I had the. Classic dress shopping with that engagement but it fell through due to his infidelity and I want to stick to my guns on this one.

Well with that out of the way definitely go for it!! I kind of wanted to do two dresses, and now with the pandemic and possibly having to postpone our wedding I might just make a second dress 🤔

It will be so special to make your own dress. It will be very cool if it gets passed down through generations. Imagine in like 80 years your great great granddaughter can be wearing your hand made wedding gown!

If you are an experienced sewer more power to you and please post photos when you are done! I am so excited for you! I'm a sucker for DIY stuff. That's why I am making everything for my wedding except my dress. Handmade things make it so much more special and personal.

I am not doing a classic wedding gown. It's going to be a 1950's day dress. I am adding a overlay in emerald lace for the bodice that buttons up the back and a skirt made of tulle that will tie up in a pretty bow at the back. I will definitely post photos when we get all the dresses done!

You have probably made your own clothes previously and had numerous comments, this will be no different. I don't think you would have thought you could do it if you didn't have the expertise to do it. Your experience with sewing and crafting will shine through. You will make beautiful dresses and do an amazing job because it's in you, the spirit of beautiful! I am excited to see the end results!
