Marriage is all about compromise but to truly be happy in a relationship you have to have some non-negotiables. Mine was that my husband and I share the same religious beliefs. It was important that we could help one another stay strong in our faith. In addition, when thinking into the future I didn't want to have the argument about how we would raise out kids and having the same religious beliefs lessened the chances of that. My husband's non-negotiable was mutual respect. He'd been in a few relationships where he felt like he didn't receive the respect that he deserved so going into our relationship and then into marriage he wanted to build a solid foundation on respect.

What are your marital non-negotiables?

A couple for us was views on when to have children and also to have respect and trust for each other. Thankfully we have mapped out a little timeline to help us grow together and then grow in numbers and that keeps both of us sane in the head. We also respect how each other feels in a particular moment and understand we are both different. Communication is key

Preach! I did not want a "momma's boy". My husband respects his mother but I'm his main lady now. I'm glad he knows that and she respects it.

Certainly, there is no one size fits all. However, if you look up divorce data, the number one reason people divorce is over money issues.

Absolutely, it's difficult to even be friends with someone who does not have the same basic morals and political views so a marriage would be nearly impossible.

Those are really unique non-negotiables. My husband and I have discussed potential names but we're open to changes. You're rationale for it is completely understandable. Thanks for sharing!

Someone else also mentioned the children's name as a non-negotiable. Thank you for sharing and I'm sorry for your loss.

Would you mind elaborating on why you two are against pornography and strip clubs?

A lot of people agree that having similar political views is important. Thank you for sharing about your infidelity, I know that is extremely personal. Are you and your husband planning to adopt?

Pre-marital counseling definitely helped my husband and I talk through how we want to raise our children and that is a huge discussion that every couple should have.
