Marriage license for eloping?

jaclynhannahxo, on August 3, 2018 at 7:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
Hi! Planning on eloping in California. Do we need to go to the county office to get a marriage license or anything? Any others who are planning on doing the same or have done have any advice? Thanks so much!! I’m so clueless. Hahah.

Im not sure I understand what youre asking
If youd like it to be legally binding, you do need a license as far as I know

I am pretty sure you need to get the license from the county you're getting married in but for out of state weddings I am FAIRLY certain they will mail them to you for an extra fee, so you won't need to travel there.

I'm sorry, for some reason I assumed this was not in your area that you live lol idk why I assumed that. But yes, get a license for the county you're getting married in!

Well I’m originally from San Diego but we are eloping in Big Sur. So not sure what we would have to do I guess that’s why I’m so confused 😅But thank you! I’ll contact their office!

In California the marriage license is statewide so it is not dependent on what county you're getting married in. For instance, we live in the Placer county area and obtained our license there because it was convenient, but we got married in Sonoma which is a different county. You can get married the same day as you obtain the license and you have to get married within 90 days or it expires.

It looks like you can use a link on this page of the Monterey County website to submit your application for your marriage license, then you will both need to go in person with your photo IDs to complete the process.
