Marriage License Ink & Mailing

Tiffany, on October 6, 2020 at 7:22 PM Posted in Married Life 0 7

Had my wedding on Saturday 10/3! Yay!!

Our officiant had us fill out and sign the marriage license in blue ink. I didn't notice until I was looking over the instructions on mailing that it said "BLACK INK ONLY"! ugh! Also, it said that the officiant mails it but he told us which portion to mail and left it with us! He's done dozens of weddings and never mentioned anything about either so I'm thinking it's ok but can't help but stress a little. Has anyone had experiences on this? Is it really that important? Will they void it? If they void it, what happens? I'm mailing it one way or another but just curious if anyone has had this experience.

Congrats! I'd check with you state/county asap and either see if anything is mentioned on tbeor website or give them a call first thing in the morning.

You should call the clerk asap to see what can be done.

Definitely check with our county/state clerks office. We signed in black and our officiant mailed ours in, but I’m not sure if that’s what’s required or just what she did. Your local office should know.

I would call the clerk to check. It will probably be fine, but calling will give you peace of mind or at least allow you to rectify the situation ASAP instead of waiting to find out changes need to be made.

Also, in the event that it isn't 100% fine, I would refute this with your officiant, who sounds like someone you hired and paid to perform your ceremony. You are paying for his expertise and professionalism. He should be mailing your license; you shouldn't need to be bothered with doing so once you have hired his services.

And once you have your license returned to you or filed with the state (however it works where you are, basically once you know everything is legal) I would leave an honest review and mention these things. Him not following the written instructions and leaving it on you to mail back everything is additional stress you don't need, and other couples should be aware of this before hiring his services. You didn't pay someone to do only a portion of their job.

I'm going through this now. What is the big deal. We both work and really don't have time to take off to reapply for another license. Ours has expired. Our ceremony was in July. It's almost October.
