Marriage License - Last Name Change

Marisa, on April 5, 2020 at 8:05 PM Posted in Married Life 0 3
Hey guys! So I live in Maryland (Harford County), and my original (uncertified) marriage license shows my maiden name. Am I able to change my last name with the certified copy? Or is it supposed to list my maiden name? Just wondering if I will have to petition to get my last name changed with social security and on my license.
Thanks!!

Your marriage license shows your maiden name because it will be your name when you get married. You will need a certified copy of your marriage certificate, not license, to change your name.

I live in MD (Charles County). Your married name will show on the original certificate after you get married. That’s the one you’ll need to change your last name with Social Security and the MVA.

Your maiden name is supposed to be on your marriage license because that is your current name. You just need a certified copy of your marriage license to take to the social security office showing you got married in order to change your name. Our marriage license shows my maiden name and I had no issues changing my name.
