My SO and I live in Arizona, but are planning on being married in Texas. Somehow, I cannot find any definitive answer online to whether we would be getting a marriage license for our state or residence or for the state we are being married in. From what I hear, it can vary state to state. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I live in Maryland, we are having the wedding and ceremony in Montgomery County, Texas - they require you to get the license in Texas. However, if you are active duty military, they waive the 72 hour wait period for the license!

I got my information from the link below. The information on the link checked out when I called BUT I would click on your state, and then county and call that clerk for a definitive answer to any questions you may have.

I would advise you to contact the county clerk where you live to confirm, but I understand that the license should be procured where you hold residency.

I'm also getting married out of state. I live in NY and am getting married in VT. You have to get the marriage license from the state you are getting married in. Good Luck!!! How has your wedding planning been so far doing everything out of state?

Hey Nia! I would suggest calling the county clerks office in the county you are getting married in to get the correct answer. Things like this do vary state to state and for residents and non-residents.

I live in Texas and officiate marriages in Texas. No matter where you live, you have to get the license in Texas, but you can get in any county and use in any county. There is a 72 hour waiting period before the ceremony can be performed once you get the license. The license expires 90 days after you get it. the waiting period is waived for active duty military. All you need is your ID, birth cert and SS. You go to the county clerk to pick up and the price different in each county ranging from $60-$84

License is needed for wherever the ceremony is being performed (most of the times, this means down to the county level).

It is SUPER confusing though. I grew up in NY but go to school in MA. We're getting married in NY and then moving to RI immediately after. It's crazy!! Good luck!

City and State in which you will be getting married is where the marriage license should come from.

You need it from Texas. Best to check with the city hall of the city you're getting married in first.

Keep in mind that some states require that you get your license in the county you're getting married so check what the state you're getting married in laws are.

My husband and I live in NY and were married in LA. We had to apply for our marriage license in LA. They also have a 3 day minimum law there so make sure you get your license within their parameters. Our officiant was able to wave the 3 days, so it all worked out. Best of luck!

I live in Georgia and am getting married in Tennessee. We have to have a Tennessee marriage license. I do believe it goes by where the wedding is located.

Hi so we I've in California but are getting married in Florida. Did your mom and stepdad have to get married in NC first then have their ceremony in SC? Is their wedding date that they had their ceremony on their marriage licenses?
