Marriage License

Hayley, on February 1, 2022 at 1:52 PM Posted in Planning 1 4
I am getting married in Tennessee, but live in Iowa. Do I have to apply for a marriage licenses in person in Tennessee or is there a way to apply online?

Yes, you will both need to go to the courthouse together with all required documentation and identification.

You’ll have to look up the specifics with the courthouse district, but you can probably make an appointment online so they have everything ready and you can pick it up the day before.

In some counties, you can fill out the application online. But you do have to go to the courthouse w/your FH & all the appropriate documentation. There’s no waiting period or any other complicated hoops to jump through. It’s pretty straight forward. We are getting ours a week before the wedding (it’s valid for 30 days).

We got our marriage license in Spring 2020 in the height of Covid so not sure if they'd still offer this but we just had to send our application in via the mail and have someone notarize that we were who we said we were. So maybe call them and see if there are any online/not in person ways to do that if traveling is not possible?
