Marriage License

Veronica, on April 22, 2020 at 9:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 69
Due to COVID-19 has anyone been able to get their marriage license during the shutdown and how long did it take? We’re doing it through a county an hour away from us and we had to send in the application paperwork and this Friday will be a week so I’m just anxious on when it will come 😭

No I haven’t yet, I’ve tried looking into it but it seems everything around me is shut down. they’re only granting emergency marriage licenses to people like military and those who need to keep health insurance for life threatening medical conditions. I’m sure they’re backed up so you should be ok since you were allowed to apply!

It's going to depend on the specific state. Some have provisions for getting marriage licenses, others have provisions only in emergency situations, and still others have no provisions at all.

I'm in NJ and my county is. We go Friday. We will bring the $28 money order, application, our witness, both of us, and our drivers license. We meet the guy outside to sign everything and he will mail it to us next week

I’m in FL and my county is doing everything via zoom and email/snail mail. We have a virtual appt next week and then they email the license so we can get married.

Wow that sounds so much easier! I DJ why in California they are making it so difficult it shouldn’t take this long 😂

    Hi Veronica,

With everything going on, I knew our clerks office was going to be closed for who knows how long, so I applied online maybe 3 weeks ago and they actually called me Tuesday and asked if I would like to complete the application by phone conference. She said with everything going on they still wanted brides to be able to get married if they wanted to. Luckily I still have plenty of time for the 60 day window, but applied early just in case. If you state is closed as well, give it sometime and hopefully they will reach out soon with some options for you! Wishing you the best!Smiley ring

That’s awesome that they called! The county we did it through is allowing issuance of marriage licenses through online and mail in application which we did last week! The county clerk is still working just limited in person service which I understand! But I’m just nervous that it won’t come and I start to worry even though we did everything right and mailed in the check and did everything they asked 😞

    Hi Veronica,

Yeah the wait can be very nerve racking. Hopefully they give you an update soon. Do you still have plenty of time prior to your actual wedding?

I see! Thats great you guys are still going to celebrate your original date. That is our plan as well. We are set to get married on July 17th. Still holding out hope since we are planning a small wedding under 50 people, but my biggest concern now is everyone is traveling from out of state. We are the only ones who live in Florida. Hopefully since you have time they get back with you and everything will work out perfectly. They also might be going in order it was received and with limited staff it might just take a little time. I will be praying for you and wish you nothing but the best!!

I’m in Duval (Jacksonville). I believe Orange County (Orlando) has an online service as well.

The process is really different in different areas. In New Hampshire, our town is not doing licenses right now but the state capital still is, and there is a neighboring town that is doing them still but you have to call ahead of time and make an appointment instead of just walking in. In NH, there is no blood test but both parties have to show up in person with government ID and you do everything in person on the spot and the license is valid the same day and good for 90 days. I have heard that in New Jersey, you can now do applications online, and those are good for 6 months. Some states require blood tests, and I'm not sure if those requirements are being waived right now. In some states, marriage licenses remain valid for a full year. It really just depends on where you are.

Yeah I know it’s so different in every state just wanted to get an idea 🙌🏼 I’m in Northern California so all we had to do was do the online portion of the marriage application and fill out paperwork with our signatures and our officiants signatures notarized and send the check so we did and it said it was received last Friday!

This is a concern for me. I live in Washington state and everything is closed up but I did read where you can fill out the marriage license form, have it notarized and send it by mail. How long it takes to get back to you, I have no idea??

That’s what we did too! So I’m just curious how long it’ll take for the marriage license to come in the mail we got everything notarized and sent off the money 😭
