Marriage License

Krystyna, on August 4, 2021 at 10:23 PM Posted in New Jersey Planning 0 4
Hello!

I am getting married next year and a friend of a friend is going to be our wedding officiant. He informed us we would be needing to get the license one month before, but that was it. Do we obtain it in the town we live in or the town the ceremony will be in? Also, do both of us have to be there to apply for it, or can one of us just go?

Thanks in advance! 😊

I got married in Ocean County and got the license in the town my husband lived in yet our ceremony was not in that town. I believe both parties need to be there because they need paperwork and documents to be signed by both parties. I would definitely call before going, some towns may have different policies.

The only other thing I’d suggest is do not wait until the 30 day window, I would call maybe 60-90 days ahead. I was told some towns process them quick then others take a few days. I know a couple who barely got theirs in time because they didn’t time it correctly, congrats and happy planning!
