Marriage License

Christine, on March 24, 2020 at 7:26 AM Posted in New Jersey Planning 0 9
We were going to elope on our dating anniversary, just us and 2 witnesses. We had an appointment at the township clerk’s office for our marriage license on the day they closed to the public. Now I can’t find a way to get a marriage license so even if we can find an officiant that is willing to do it... we can’t! 😫😫 Our situation isn’t as stressful because we don’t have plans or guests or any of that but it’s still upsetting 😞. Anyone have any advice on how or where we can get a license? We live in Southern NJ

You have to get the license from the town u reside in. You aren’t going to be able to get one in NJ right now.

I really don't think there's any way around it, you will have to wait.

I'm in the same boat but I'm in PA. We have cancelled our May wedding so we have a small ceremony planned because FH sister is ordained so we literally just need the license. It's so frustrating with no open date in sight!

My friend was getting married May and said her county in NY was allowing licenses to be requested by mail? I'm not sure if this is still true or not in other places.

You can't, unfortunately. Due to the shelter in place order, municipal buildings are closed and therefore not issuing marriage licenses.

We're in the same boat. We're talking about having just a ceremony between us on our day, and then getting the license when the courthouse re-opens and having a second ceremony then. I figure hey, it'll give us two wedding anniversaries, right? Smiley laugh

Hi there- I also am getting married in southern Nj. My wedding date is May 30th... best case is we will probably have a small ceremony on May 30th and celebrate later on in October. The town I applied in is really flexible and working with us for when we need to pick up our license. Not sure if you might be able to go to another court house near by and see if they would be more flexible?

    Best of luck!

Hi Erin! Thank you! I was able to work with our Township Clerk and she is allowing us to handle things via mail. It also helps that we live in a small town and that her and I know each other. I lucked out also because at this time, they are only offering this to couples who already had a date set. Thank you again for the input and good luck to you as well!!

Thank you all for the support and input! We were able to get our license by reaching out to our Township Clerk. Since our date was already set, they were kind enough to work with us via dropbox/mail. Now, our private/Facebook Live ceremony is back on! 🥰🥰
