Marriage or Mortgage?

So I just finished binge watching Marriage or Mortgage on Netflix! Couples have a save up some money and they are debating if they should use the money towards the wedding of their dreams or house of their dreams. I love these types of shows! Which one would you pick? Did you go through something similar?

For me: I choose Mortgage (twice) before Marriage. My fiance and I bought our first house after being together for 3 years. We had several discussions about getting married someday, but with apartment living we were tired of paying rent and wanted our own place. After about 2 years in our first house, we grew out it and wanted an upgrade, plus the home value went up and we used the funds towards our next house! We are pretty content in our house now, so it was time for the next step... MARRIAGE!

We chose both. I already owned a home, so we stayed there until we got married. We had our dream wedding and a few months later, bought a new nome.

I have heard of the show but haven't watched it. I guess you could say we chose both, but it doesn't really apply to us. I have had a down payment saved up for a few years and would really love to be a homeowner, but we have another cross country move in our future before we will be ready to buy a house. That said, the money I have saved for the type of house we'd want ($50k for a 20% deposit on a $250k house) is much more than our wedding cost (originally shooting for $10k, now looking more like $18k...). There is no way I'd have a $35k wedding if I had that much or less saved, but if that's your entire net worth then you shouldn't really be putting all of it in a down payment anyway.

Yes that definitely makes sense! Most of the couples budget on the show is between 20k - 35k. I know a lot of people can make a wedding happen with a lot less than that.

It's great you are able to save up and get both!

Yes! We did go through this debate a lot! Especially with Covid and being told we couldn’t have things like dancing initially, it has crossed our mind dozens of times! We came to the decision that once we’re married we’re going to start having children immediately and we figured our wedding day would be the one last time in our lives that we could really just go for it and party like rock stars. We have our whole lives to buy houses and save and be responsible with money. This is the one last hurrah of ‘wasteful spending so speak. I can’t find the right words, but what I mean by wasteful spending is the fact that we’re buying a whole furniture set just for our wedding day as decor. Things like that. We just want this one big party before we break into the harsh reality and responsibilities that life imposes

My fiancé chose mortgage before we were even considering marriage, so it's an easy choice - marriage! In an alternate universe where he didn't own our current house, we'd probably go mortgage.

Lol marriage is NOT a wedding! Lol. I choose marriage with a dirt cheap wedding or elopement AND a house downpayment

Haven’t heard of it. But I don’t really see the need to choose, when wedding costs can easily be adjusted. We have a nice house already and we’re planning a wedding. So, I say both.

Yes, that does make the choice a lot easier since you are already in a house!

Yes, you are actually right! There is a difference between having a dream wedding and getting married on a budget/eloping.

We chose both; we scheduled the wedding a year and half out and paid monthly on it while fixing finances to buy a house. Now, our wedding is paid for and we are in the process of buying a home.

That is true wedding cost can be adjusted to fit what you can afford to make both of them work!

My fiancé and I started watching this today and it drives him nuts because he thinks it’s wild to spend a down payment on a wedding if you’re renting! Thankfully I bought my house and am a few years into a mortgage already. So we have a healthy wedding budget and don’t need to scuffle about whether to use it as a down payment or a wedding. Thank goodness. Because honestly I’d probably choose wedding.

We haven't watched that show yet, and I want to make the plunge. I'm pretty sure I'd choose a house over a lavish wedding. You don't need to do anything super expensive and elaborate to marry the love of your life.
