Married Name Return Address Labels?

JulyPittsburghBride, on June 20, 2016 at 7:34 PM Posted in Married Life 0 15

We're close enough to our date that I'd like to order return address labels to use on our correspondence (we actually send and receive a lot of mail). When we get married, I am taking my FH's new last name. However, I am moving my current last name to have a double middle name.

So, it would look like this (sample names):

FH's name: John Patrick Smith

My current name: Katie Marie Jones

My name to be: Katie Marie Jones Smith, which could be written as Katie M. J. Smith, Katie M. Jones Smith, etc., depending on the situation/environment.

Did anyone change their name like I am? I guess it is sort of like hyphenating, though I'm not. How would our address labels look? And any favorite places to order?

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

John P. and Katie M. Jones Smith

John and Katie Jones Smith?

John Smith and Katie Jones Smith?

I tried Googling etiquette on this and searched WW but came up dry.

We just ordered return address labels with his last name only. I'm taking his name, so it just seems easier, and less wording I have to look at.

I usually look for the persons last name anyways. I know too many people with the same first name.

I pretty much mail everything out with my first initial and full last name anyways. I'm lazy, and it saves me 4 letters.

    Thanks, guys!

In some circumstances, I think it's okay to use only his last name with mine.

The complication is that we're both elected officials, and we were both elected by our last names. It's really important that I continue to use my last name or at least be associated with my last name for political purposes, as that's how I'm quoted in the paper, will campaign again, will be on ballots, etc.

My first and last name, as a combo, are kind of my branding, so-to-speak, but so are his. :\ I didn't foresee this complication when we got engaged, haha!

I really like the Katie M.J. Smith. I will however warn you that you could be in for a lifetime of bureaucratic headaches. Anything from medical documents to financial records and everything in between will be a crap shot if they get your name right. If you are cool with it, then do it - but if inefficiencies get under your skin at all, you are setting yourself up for a life of one.

All the post office cares about is your last name. If you and FH live together at this point and just put his last name, the name you will have soon, the post office will be able to get any undelivered mail back to you.

Your labels can have your name written any way that you desire as long as the last name is correct! I ordered mine from Vistaprint and they just had FH and my last name. I will have two last names for professional reasons. So mine say Doe and Smith with no first names. I mainly did that so it wouldn't be so long.

You do what works for you! Sorry for two posts, it's easier on mobile.

@Erika, thanks for the insight. I like the last names only. For us, names help with name recognition, even though I guess we could just put the address.

I'm honestly starting to wonder if I should order a few sets--personal ones like:

Mr. and Mrs. John P. Smith

    Address

Ones I use for my correspondence:

    Mrs. Katie M. Jones Smith

    Address

And ones we use for joint business:

Mr. J. Patrick Smith and Mrs. K Jones Smith

    Address

Or something like that. Smiley smile

When I ordered labels I just had them say Travis & Courtney. No last name.

We did our address stamp with just our first names so that we could use it both before and after the wedding.

Once I get my name officially changed everywhere (and we move!) I'll order a new one with Mr & Mrs LastName or The LastName's depending on the style we end up picking

I used them for shower thank you notes, thank you notes and wedding invites!

We ordered our stamp with first names only, to avoid the last name confusion. It just seemed easier in the long run. Plus we could use it before and after the wedding.

PS - I'm planning on changing my name the same way you are.

I did what @kels and @jade did with just our first names. Then I can use it for all wedding things and after too. I'm planning to change my name like you are but I'll only go by Mrs. HisLastName. Being in your position I could see how it would change things. I think you have a good idea to order multiple so you can use for the different things

I just did our first names. After we get married, I might order another one but I'm happy with the one I bought off Etsy.

What about a design with your first names and a big last initial? I've seen those, maybe even on VistaPrint, and they may get the job done.

I did the same thing with my name after my first marriage. It took a minute to explain to the lady at the Social Security Admin. what is was doing when I went to change my name. After that, I had no trouble. I generally went by, and signed, my name in this format: Jane J. D. Smith.

@MrsBBR--For personal stuff, I think that would be great! For us, though, it really helps to have our names out in public as often as possible for name recognition. So, we really want our respective last names to be seen. For me, my current first/last name combo is what I want seen out there. That's where it gets tricky. :\

Ohhh.... SS Admin... not looking forward to that. Smiley laugh
