Dedicated October 2021

Married Taxes Question

Madison, on March 15, 2021 at 2:13 AM Posted in Married Life 0 12
I am planning to get married in October 2021. My Fiancé and I have always wanted a small just us elopement type ceremony, but our parents have convinced us to do a slightly more traditional wedding. ( we compromised with a small, immediate family ceremony, and a larger reception) However, we still want to just elope before the October 2021 wedding and not tell anyone in order to spare feelings.

My question is this: My mom usually helps me with my taxes each year, if we get married before October will I have to specify my wedding date when filing my taxes for next year?
I’ve googled it, but can’t really find anything specific, so if anyone can help me with this, Thank you so much!

    Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: you'll be registered with the government, YES.

Hi Madison, like previous posts, yes you do, however this won’t be until April 2022 for your 2021 taxes so perhaps hopefully by then it will be a moot point as your family wedding will be complete. Good luck ❤️❤️❤️

As others have said, yes, you need to report it on your taxes. Also, lying to your loved ones about the actual wedding date will more than likely cause far more hurt feelings when the truth eventually comes out.

Yes, you’ll likely have to report it. Be prepared too that you’ll have to share with your officiant for the October wedding that you’re already married since they’ll probably be expecting to sign/turn in your marriage license.

    THIS.

"[lying] in order to spare feelings" is not a sound or logical plan, from any perspective. Your taxes are the least of your worries.

Yes, you will NEED to file as MARRIED, 100% whether you file jointly or separately. Even if you were only married for ONE day of a tax year (ex, dec 30th wedding 2021), you still are absolutely required to file as married on your 2021 return

If you only do taxes annually (most people do, but self-employed individuals or those who own a business may file quarterly), the only the year will matter.

So if you get married legally earlier in 2021 and then have a party in October 2021, you will file your 2021 taxes (which are actually filed in the beginning of 2022) as married. It won't make a difference whether you get married on Jan 1, 2021 or Dec 31, 2021, it still counts as being married in the same year.

I'm not sure what sort of documentation is required when filing taxes (we got married last year and are doing our taxes as a married couple for the first time next week, so I haven't done it just yet). You may need to provide a date or your marriage certificate.

You could also use your marriage as an opportunity to change the way you do your taxes. Prior to marriage my husband used TurboTax but I actually have a tax prep guy. Since we will be filing together we decided to just use my tax guy (similar cost, invests our money back into our local economy, supports our neighbors), and he will no longer use TurboTax. You can just file with your husband and get help from someone other than your mom.

This. Do not lie to your friends and family or officiant because they will all find out.
