Mash Potato Bar

MRS Win to BE, on March 15, 2014 at 12:56 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

Ok. We are having a caterer but we really want a Mash potato bar. We are allowed to bring in our own food and want to this ourselves. We would order the mash potatoes from a local cuban restaurant and then buy the topping ourselves. Then have our planner out it out... It will cost around $200 compared to $1000 for the caterer to do it. What do you all think?

Who is going to take care of all the prep for it that day?

Because I've never heard of this, what kind of toppings do you put on mashed potatoes? Sounds yum!

    Bacon, sour cream, cheese, broccoli

Sweet mashed potatoes: cinnamon, brown sugar, marshmallows, pecans...yum

Personally I think that it's a lot of prep work, how are you keeping the consistency correct etc that it will work on the day of your reception?

Taking care of the toppings themselves is going to be tough!

Covered they will get starchy and soupy.. if they are kept heated in a chaffing tray they will get crusted over which will then not be appealing either. Just a thought!

I like the idea of the bar, but personally I vote for baked potatoes vs mashes for a lot of reasons.

but that's a personal thing, I think out of the two baked works better.

if you can't do baked, I still think the mashed potato sounds like a good idea. particularly for that kind of savings.

I wouldn't worry about people not wanting to take care of the toppings and all that. provide them with the right utensils and all that, I think a group of adults can handle it Smiley smile

It's a lot of work and there is a lot of waste, topping wise.

I love the idea of a mashed potato bar, but I think it's too much work to do yourselves. It needs maintenance. We are doing a mac and cheese bar.

My best friend had a mashed potato bar at her wedding back before this was a "thing". It was delicious and, aside from the sushi station, the most popular food at her wedding. There was a LOT of good food at her wedding. But those mashed potatoes were nomalicious.

I bet the mashed potatoes would not last long enough for them to get soupy or crusty. My sister and I would be all over that station.

You probably don't need a lot of toppings - sour cream, bacon, chives, cheese (?). Put them in little bowls with cute spoons and you're all set.
