Masked Ceremony

Alli, on July 28, 2020 at 9:35 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 20
Hi all!

Freaking out. Getting married in a month and just got off the phone with our first choice officiant. She will not perform unless we are ALL wearing masks, us included. We completely respect her decision; however, we will not wear masks as we say our vows and I do’s.
Anyone else running into this?!

We postponed our wedding, but if we were going forward I would 100% be on the same page as you! We can’t wear masks during vows and I do, that’s crazy! I completely understand everyone needing to wear a mask and the safety pat, but it’s just not practical to wear them for that part of the ceremony.

Right?! I also agree with the masks as we both wear one all day everyday lol... but not for our ceremony! We would postpone, too; however, the future MIL has end-stage cancer Smiley sad so, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place!

I’m so sorry to hear that, that’s a very difficult situation but definitely a great reason to go forward! I’m sure she is going to be so excited at your wedding! Maybe talk to the officiant about allowing you to take the masks off for just that short part? She could even step away while you say your vows and take your masks off if that would make her more comfortable. Honestly though, if she’s 100% not ok with no masks for vows I would consider a different officiant. That’s just such a beautiful moment you don’t want to miss it!

💯 agree with finding a different officiant. Our officiant did the pre-ceremony work and walked out with a mask but took it off for the actual ceremony. I can’t imagine wearing masks. Did you try to offer if she could stand at a distance?

Would she be willing to wear a face shield & mask and stand at a distance from the two of you (using a microphone, if necessary), if you were the ONLY people not wearing masks? I'm usually pretty conservative about Covid precautions, but even I think it's a lot to ask the B&G to wear masks during their vows.... Or, what if there was a plexiglass barrier between her and the two of you? (I teach at a university and the current plan, if it can open this fall, is to have the professors teach class from behind a clear barrier while the students are masked and socially distanced -- I'm sure that plan had to make it past govt health officials.) Good luck!

I would ditch her and get a new officiant or have her stand far enough back with a faceshield/mic like others said..

I would postpone. It's smart that she is requiring masks as everyone should be wearing them. And yeah it sucks to have to wear them for vows but that's why you postpone. Then you don't have to worry about it. Good luck!

Did you try explaining this to your Officiant? Maybe they would be a little more kind due to the circumstances.

We did! We talked to another officiant last night who was understanding and asked if he could stand 6 ft from us and him wear a mask if we do not during our vows and I said that would be absolutely fine! So hoping this one works out Smiley heart

I would postpone or find someone else if you can the masks will not be good for pictures. i mean i personally would hate my pictures as we stand up there holding hand, saying vows and not seeing our facial expressions etc.

Wow, I haven't heard of this before but it seems absolutely ridiculous for the officiant to expect you to be wearing masks in your wedding photos (or at least the ones of the ceremony).
