Masters Degree

Emily, on April 14, 2020 at 12:26 PM Posted in Married Life 0 9
Hey all! So I’m getting married to the love of my life in August. But I will be finishing my Masters degree in July, diploma would be mailed a month or so following (after wedding) and I’d be able to walk at the graduation ceremony in December.

Trying to decide if I want my maiden name on my diploma or my married name. Anyone faced something similar, what’d you do?

I actually never considered using my married name on my diploma at all! I started my program before we got married so I used the (maiden) name on all my work, dissertation etc.

Yeah so mine will be the same way, I’ll be done with it basically a month before we get married but then the diploma and ceremony will happen after we get married. Just not sure which name id like to use! So did you graduate while married then?

I don't know if you even can have your married name on your diploma. I'm currently in a doctoral program, and I needed to show proof of the legal name change to change it with the university. If they are mailing you the diploma a month later, that is probably their estimate of how long it takes to print and mail out all the diplomas. I think you'd have to have the name change done prior to your degree being conferred. Maybe check with the grad office. Also, are you getting some sort of license after your masters? If so, I would consider whether I wanted my degree and license to have matching names.

So our program advisor was actually the one who mentioned it to me that I could have them print the degree with my married name. Let me check on that to make sure, like you’re saying if I need to show legal documentation. Thanks!

I would put your maiden name because you finished the degree before you were married

Hope you are still looking for an answer, I'd keep my maiden name and if this causes some problems later, I'd just bring my marriage certificate.

I have a similar situation. I am finishing my degree next May and plan on getting married in June. He's been there for me through my whole education but I still will keep my maiden name on my diploma. I decided to wait on the wedding so I could finish before getting married.
