Matte vs dewy foundation

kelsey , on April 4, 2019 at 8:45 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 4

UGH

so I'm doing my own wedding makeup and I'm trying to get stocked up on products so i can do a couple test runs.

I do have a foundation i wear daily, that seems to work ok for my skin (i am SUPER dry), so I'm not sure i want to change that up, and be stuck having it not work out with my skin type.

However, I LOVE the look of fresh dewy, natural skin, I figure highlighter and maybe a dewy primer can achieve this look but I'm not exactly sure how this will photograph??

My biggest fear is having a lot of flashback and looking SUPER white in the face compared to everywhere else

Flashback in pictures is usually a result of the foundation having SPF in it so first make sure the one you choose does not have SPF. You want to choose a foundation formula that is meant for your skin so if you have dry skin, you don't want to use a matte formula. I personally have dry skin and also love the dewy look. I use the Tarte Base Tape Hydrating Primer, then the Tarte Face Tape foundation and the Shape Tape concealer, followed by Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray. If you have oily skin, I would stick to a more matte foundation so you don't look shiny in photos and just add some dewiness with a good primer, setting spray, and some highlighter. Also, I apply my products with a damp beauty blender which also helps keep things fresh and dewy-looking.

I second the no SPF comment. Also be careful about the powders you use to set your makeup, as many can cause flashback.

Make sure you’re keeping up with a skin regimen prior to the wedding, as dry skin is super hard to cover, but a great moisurizer goes a long way. I love the Kate Somerville quench serum myself.

As for flashback, I’m a makeup artist and I always test any products that are new by taking a strong flash photo after I use them, to see if there’s any flashback. Also, most photographers say they bounce the flash, so if there’s less direct flash the chance of flashback in your professional photos is decreased at least.

If you run dry, you should be using a dewy foundation or a moisturizing primer. I like the Becca one that is purple. Some foundations I like that don't have SPF are MAC and the NARS radiant full coverage. I would keep a powder compact with you so you could always touch up and test a dewy foundation first. If you have a Sephora near you, talk to the people that work there! They know the products, will have recommendations and will provide samples for you to look at. What ever you do, don't use a "dewy finish setting spray". Generally these just have glitter in them!
