mau Products

Hi ladies, so I found a makeup artist I really like for my wedding day; however, when she showed me the products she uses they’re mainly drugstore makeup brand. I have no problem with the brand my only concern is that I have sensitive oily skin and can’t use just any product and I want the products to last all nigh as well. She’s charging me $85 for day of, which is not bad but it’s not cheap either. I don’t know how to feel about it. Other mau charge $100 and have mostly brand-name products. I could always ask her to use my products but then again I’m paying good money and doesn’t feel right. Has anyone else had an issue with the products used? Or Any advice?

You didn't list the specific brands so I can't list any issues with the products. However, I suggest asking if she will use your products if you feel most comfortable. Money shouldn't play into the equation, you're paying for her services and time (and possibly travel.)

A good MUA can do more with drugstore makeup than a poor MUA can do with the best product.

She uses Elf, Wet n Wild, cover girl and L’Oréal, i think is what I saw in her kit, Which, again i have no problem as long as it lasts all night and looks good on me. The other maus i spoke to had the more expensive stuff like tarte, Estée Lauder, Bobbi Brown etc. I don’t know much about makeup so I don’t want to be a “you pay what you get for” scenario if I don’t pick wisely 😫

Ive heard great reviews of people using drug store brands with a primer and setting spray. If you have or can find a primer in advanced, that may help with your skin. Or opt to use your own products since you know how theyll be. But I'm a big fan of the setting spray. heck, id pack one anyway lol

That sounds like a good idea. I guess I just want to get my money’s worth but I also don’t want to miss on a great mau only bc the products she uses.

If you like both artists, perhaps just go for the $100 artist to give you piece of mind. $15 isn’t a huge different to pay to give you more confidence in the products.

I will say that I use a mix of drug store and prestige brands in my usual makeup routine. My MUA used Sephora products (so mix of prestige and some mid-level). I don’t know that my professional makeup held up that much longer or better than my daily makeup... the airbrush foundation did! But the eyeshadow creased as usual. 🤷‍♀️ The application and variety of shades is more what I was paying for I suppose!

Tbh I have worked some serious eyebrow magic with ELF. Not a MUA, but I grew up dancing and learned a ton for recitals and occasional competitions, as well as doing makeup for my kid sister backstage. She uses a lot of those for show choir now, so it holds under hot lights and lots of dancing! I wouldnt worry.

As an esthetician, I wouldn't want drugstore brands just due to some of the harsh chemicals they have. The longevity is not good, the pigment is not there. This is your wedding, and you need quality products. Drug store makeup isn't bad for day to day use, but not an extremely formal event where photography will be taken.

Are you doing a trial? That may help you decide Smiley smile I understand the fear and struggle! If the cheaper artist does good work and is willing to use your products then that sounds like the best of both worlds. Good luck and happy planning!
