Maybe not so 'traditional' wedding ideas...?

Stephanie, on November 3, 2019 at 10:57 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 5
My fiancé and I have been considering some alternative ideas for our wedding. We're thinking about hosting our ceremony and reception at our church and holding a block of rooms at an oceanfront hotel where traveling guests can stay (we'll be staying there, as well).

We'd hold the ceremony and reception with catered food at the church in the late-afternoon, then head back to the hotel to party with guests (e.g., go to a oceanfront restaurant/bar for drinks and late night snacks), and local guests can join, too. The church doesn't allow alcohol on the premises (not that alcohol must be present, but our parents and other family members don't really drink alcohol, or at least 'expect it' to have a good time).

In the long run, this will save us funds as we're both members of the church, so it's almost $0 for venue, officiant, and wedding planner fee (just have to pay for catering, photography, and music). Then we could host an 'after-party' for anyone that wants to join at the hotel restaurant/bar (covered under our host bill on alcohol, etc) to celebrate until the late-evening, and also host a morning brunch...

I don't want to sound cheap, but we're also focused on investing in our future life as parents, etc.

We're hosting our wedding in Virginia Beach, so evening though it requires some travel expenses for my family in Southern New Jersey, I still feel as though Virginia Beach could be considered a vacation spot that most folks would want to travel and enjoy this special day/weekend with us.

Does this sound appealing to you? Or cheap? I appreciate your honesty. Smiley smile

Thank you!! It’s tough because we want to make sure that traveling guests enjoy themselves, but at the end of the day, they all understand the pressure that comes with planning/paying for a wedding. We appreciate your support!

I don't think this is a super "not traditional" idea, most weddings we go to host after parties. We had alcohol at our wedding & it went until 11 PM, and most our guests partied in our hotel bar until about 2AM (after party wasn't hosted). So I think it sounds like a pretty normal idea, go for it!

This feedback is definitely reassuring. My family is all about low-key, yet enjoyable experiences with special events like a wedding. I'm not like one to break the 'status-quo,' but honestly, I feel like guests would still have a through chance to celebrate with us, but also enjoy the 'after hours.' We're still keeping options open, but having this feedback is very helpful. Thanks so much.
