Menu in Wedding invitation?

So we are having our wedding at a fantastic restaurant and have decided to go with a sit-down dinner, since it cost about the same as doing their "basic" buffet. Everything about it is wonderful, except I am having a hard time doing the invitations. I don't particularly want to do just a Beef, Chicken, and Vegetarian check off list because of how the meal are. I thought about doing titles like "New York Strip Steak", "Airline Chicken", and "Stuffed Portabella Mushrooms", but I feel like nobody will know what Airline Chicken is and in the end will avoid it because who wants to eat airline food when there's steak on the menu?

The Airline Chicken is Chicken breast and drumette stuffed with a cornbread and dried cherry stuffing, finished with smoked gouda cheese sauce. Even the Stuffed Mushrooms are filled with spinach artichoke stuffing drizzled with alfredo sauce, not your typical stuffing.

I'm also worried someone will order the chicken thinking it will just be seasoned chicken when they're lactose intolerant, then not be able to eat the meal they ordered.

I don't know if I should dedicate a little part of the details card to print a description of each meal? Will that seem tacky? Or if I'm just over thinking this?

    Include the options in a simplified format on the rsvp card. Restaurants are going crazy these days with descriptions of menu items being 1/4 of a page long.

    e.g chicken with cornbread and dried cherry stuffing

    If you include a line about dietary restrictions, you might catch any conflicts and the guests know you are willing to accommodate allergies, lifestyle choices etc.

    Did you include something along the lines of "please contact us for dietary restrictions"? Something like that will give your guests the chance to call you and discuss what those restrictions might be so that you can best tell them what their options are. FH and I had two entree options from the venue, and they will meet any dietary restrictions, we just have to notify them. So our invitations have our entree choices one chicken, one beef, and then states for anybody with dietary restrictions to contact us for other options.

    I would include a shortened description of the items. I'm not lactose intolerant but I wouldn't love it if I was expecting plain chicken and got something covered in cheese. Maybe call it something like "Stuffed chicken with smoked Gouda sauce" and then "spinach and artichoke stuffed mushrooms with Alfredo "

    You could always ask for online RSVPs, and put the full food descriptions on your wedding website.

    I'm a pretty picky eater, so I would need the additional information to be able to choose. Annoying, I know, but it is what it is. For example, without a description, I would probably always choose Steak, but if I got there and it was smothered in mushrooms, I'd be gagging and probably wouldn't eat it.
    I like the shortened descriptions suggested by PP. At least let them know the main components happening on each plate.

    For the menu, put a small description beside each option. (Steak, mushrooms, mashed potatoes, veggies) Make sure you put the gluten, dairy, nuts part of the description in each one so people will know not to get that one if it has any of them. If you are still concerned, put a line saying something like "for full menu descriptions, please visit our website at..." That will save some people who are picky

    I do plan to have all this listed out on our wedding website, so I'm hoping people check that out before RSVPing. I'm just more nervous for those few who do not have internet.

    I think an insert in the invitation with the menu would work fine for this, and/or having the info on your website if you have one .

    Will your venue allow your guests to just choose their entrees at the tables? That's how everyone does it where I live. We had menus at each seat and guests told the servers what they wanted at the wedding.

    Hi Liesl! This is exactly what we did! I didn't have room for the full (or shortened) descriptions on our RSVP card - so we stuck to Steak, Chicken, or Salmon on the RSVP and I included full entree descriptions on our wedding website.

    I like the idea of an insert with the invitation and then they can tick off the shortened description on the RSVP card.

    I think you’re over thinking it. We listed a very simple filet mignon, chicken Parmesan, and salmon. Plus the chicken parm really isn’t chicken parm, it’s similar but different. And we said please inform us of any dietary restrictions. This way, while we aren’t up front offering vegetarian and are pretty sure we don’t have any coming, if someone informs us they are we can absolutely accommodate them with something else. And if we have any allergies we can accommodate them without having to have a huge drawn out explanation of each of it’s not necessary.

    No they have to select before hand. Though the did say if there was dietary restrictions they could remake a dinner, but still you don't want guests waiting for food.
