Menu options

Hello!!! So while me and FH are still early in planning we are weighing reception options and ideas. So we’ve found a venue - a blank canvas party hall! However we are opting not to do a plated dinner or honesty dinner at all. Our reception will be 2pm-5pm and I want to serve appetizers and non hard alcoholic beverages ( beer, wine, champagne)- however I’m kind of struggling with food ideas. I worked catering a few years ago and plan to cater my own wedding for about 50 guests. So far I plan on having meatballs, roasted potatoes, buffalo & bbq wing dings, bacon wrapped shrimp, onion rings, fries, sliders( this is still a maybe) ,Turkey roll ups, house salad, Caesar salad , and fruit salad. Store bought items like mini muffins, cookies, cupcakes, and cinnamon rolls. Water, iced tea, strawberry lemonade, pop, champagne, beer and wine. How does this sound to you? Anything you would add or take away?Lastly I see a lot of negativity on this app! If you are not open minded to non traditional things with weddings please don’t comment. I’m looking for helpful advice- not bashing commentary. Thank you with respect and love!!!!!

The only thing I think is that's a lot of apps!! I honestly think that you could pare it down some to make life easier for you- I don't generally thing that guests need that large of an assortment. Other thought is that the salads may be difficult to do as an app. At all the weddings I've been to, apps are generally passed around and guests are standing so something like a salad might end up being a bit cumbersome. It all sounds delicious though!!

That's a lot of food! Sounds like your guests will be happy and fed. Wings just might be a little messy to be standing and eating with your hands.

I would probably just do one type of salad. I also agree that wings could be messy but if everyone has somewhere to sit and eat, they might be okay. I also don't think you need the pastries unless those will be dessert items instead of a cake.

Can I get an invite to your wedding? Those are like all my favorite foods lol! Seriously, though, since you’ve worked in catering, you obviously know the work involved, so just make sure if you’re doing it yourself you leave enough space and everything else involved in wedding prep for the bride! Also, you know your guests so you’ll know what dietary restrictions to take into account, but maybe add veggies and some kind of dip for those who can’t partake in all your delicious meat apps/who are trying to eat lighter.

Ok sorry I left a few details out. The apps will be served in a buffet style. My biggest fear is people leaving hungry, so I want finger foods on the heavier side but just no actual dinner served. The ceremony and reception will be in the same room, so everyone will have a seat assigned at a table. Thank you though!

That sounds fun! I would eliminate one of the salads and add rolls or biscuits. If you choose to exclude the sliders, you’ll need another carb for guests that partake in the beer and wine.

Sorry I forgot to say everyone will be seated- there just won’t be a server and a full course meal served. Thank you! I’m just want everyone fed and happy!

I’m doing two types for options. Some people can’t have preferences and others have dietary restrictions- so I want this to feel inclusive in a way. There will only be a “couples cake” I don’t know if it’s truly a thing or not but most of the guest don’t eat cake so me and FH just will have a personal cake on display.

Hi Lala. Maybe instead of salad, you can change to heartier veggie dishes such as mini-quiches, veggie potstickers, chilled cucumber or gazpacho soup in shot glasses (my fave). You can also easily purchase a platter of raw shrimp and california roles (veggie sushi) at grocery stores which do not need to be warmed. For dessert, you can simplify to muffins and fruit. Cakepops?

Congrats, this sounds like a lovely mid-day reception. I have been to fun NY cocktail dinner weddings, but if there isn't enough selection, people will not eat and get very drunk. But, I think yours is well-planned and timed.

Oooh your spread sounds delish. I was at a party recently and they had a salsa and gauc bar,it was so fun and easy a bunch of different types of chips and variety of salsas and gauc *the mango and peach salsas were my fave*, pigs and a blanket, potato, macaroni and pasta salads are some other ideas if you need some more options. If you have a Costco near you I definitely recommend checking them out, they often have great platter options and I love their baked goods. Happy planning sounds like you are going to have tasty day!Smiley heart

While your wedding/reception is during non-meal times, you are very thoughtful in making sure your guests are well-fed. I don't think anyone will even want dinner after all that! You certainly don't need to add anything! Other appetizers I've seen (if you're up for other options) are: taquitos, pizza bites, chicken satay, lumpia/spring rolls...
