Mermaid dress dancing

Mermaid dress dancing 1
Hey all, looking for some advice. After a LOT of searching I have found my dream dress! The only thing stopping me saying yes is the fear I won’t be able to dance properly. The one I tried was a couple of sizes too big so I was pinned in so it was hard to tell how much movement I will have once the fit is right. Does anyone have any experience wearing a tight mermaid dress and still being able to dance? Should I buy a size bigger than needed and take it in on the top to give my legs more room to move or will that ruin the dress? Any advice grateful received! I really don’t want to keep hunting!

Well I had to mermaid gowns and the one that I wore for the reception was not terribly cumbersome to Dancing as it didn’t have a lot of tool underneath. However I did end up changing into a jumpsuit later into the evening. That being said your gown looks like it should be easy to maneuver and should not be a problem if bustled correctly.

Don’t buy a bigger dress than necessary because extra alterations add up. Go back to the store and have them pin up the train into a bustle and dance around in the store. That’s really the only way you will know if it works.

Even if you buy your dress in your correct size, it will most certainly need to be altered in hips
, waist, bust, etc. your seamstress can make sure it’s not too tight!

My alterations was a flat fee, so no matter what needed to be fixed, it was all included.

Good luck! And you look beautiful Smiley smile

Oh thank you! Only mum and I have seen it so it’s lovely to hear it’s not just us that thought it looked nice! That’s really good to know. There isn’t an in house seamstress at the shop which is a shame but I will ask around to see if it can someone who works to a flat fee. Great tip!

Worked in bridal for 3.5 years- yes, some mermaids are hard to dance in. I've worn ones I could barely walk in. It mostly depends on the amount of stretch the fabric has; it looks like a satin, but some satins have some stretch and some don't. If the fabric has very little stretch, and you want to keep the shape you have with it pinned like in the picture, dancing will probably be harder. Personally, I'd be more worried about being able to sit- I've seen scenarios before where the dress was so snug the bride couldn't sit comfortably. All that said, it's a beautiful dress, and you clearly look very happy in it- and there are ways to work around these issues.
