"Message in a bottle " vows

Leisa, on September 6, 2012 at 4:02 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

Has anyone done this? We want to write our own vows and they suggest we do this. I'm not sure what it really is, but I don't want to feel like I'm reading to my FH.

can you enlighten me?

I don't fully understand your question... You want to write your own vows and someone suggested you do Message In A Bottle vows, but you don't know what that is? Is there a reason that they would be better for your ceremony than other personally written vows? Are you getting married on a beach or on a boat or something? Are they just suggesting that you put your personalized vows in a bottle and throw them in the water after the ceremony?

Can't say that I know anything specific about Message in a Bottle vows... sorry!

In regards to "reading to your FH", If you write your own vows, I really would reading them at the altar. It's such an emotional moment, that I think it would be very difficult to recall memorized vows. I was worried about reading my vows off a piece of paper also, but at that moment it didn't matter at all, I was thankful that I had the words there in front of me.

Unless you're a very experienced public speaker, read your vows (glancing at your groom frequently) or repeat after your officiant.

I've officiated a LOT of weddings (almost 1,250) and B&G forget their vows, forget which hand is left and which is right, giggle or cry through vows.

If my couples want to write their own vows, I prefer that they read them rather than repeat after me. Sounds kind of odd if I'm saying, "Honey, when I first met you I knew you were the one!"

I get it...I probably will be emotional, so writing them would be a good idea, lol.

I am confused about what you mean by "message in a bottle vows".

But, I plan on reading my vows! Or at least having notes! I have a lot to say and don't want to forget anything! Plus, I know I will be bawling happy tears and so I think them written down will be better than just trying to remember them!

Anything I can find about "message in a bottle" vows seems to be a couples vows just put into a bottle and thrown into water after the ceremony or during the reception, or even in a private moment later. I'm not finding any particular wording for these vows.

I've seen invitations in a bottle for beach/boat weddings.

The vows are placed in a bottle at our feet, and then you take them out of it to read...then I guess it's a keepsake. I'm not 100% sure?

    I wrote my own vows.

I'm going to DIY them all pretty on some cardstock 3x4" and keep it tucked in with my bouquet. I'll read them from the card, because I'm sure otherwise I'd forget them in the crazy of the day.

Hmmm.... I'd possibly read my vows and THEN roll them up and put them into a bottle as a keepsake for later (or to throw in the water). But, trying to take them out of a bottle during the ceremony sounds like a hassle to me. Unless you rolled them up tight and tied them, so they don't unroll any larger than the bottle neck.

This couple threw their bottled-vows the water of Lake Michigan and it was found by another couple married on the same date 28 years earlier!

When couples write their own vows, I include them in the keepsake ceremony booklet. I also print them onto pretty paper to hand to them at the appropriate points in the ceremony. That way, they're not fishing wadded up bits of paper from pockets or bodices!

I love that idea Nancy T!

We wrote our own vows. Because I am an old tart, I can't read without my reading glasses. However, I am also an old VAIN tart. So, i printed it in a large font that I could read without my glasses. This way I didn't look like grannie bride.

Oh I love, love, love the idea of tossing vows out to sea in a bottle! Definitley stopping at the beach on our mini-moon and tossing our vows into the Pacific Ocean! Smiley smile

Don't think I like the idea of taking them out of the bottle at the ceremony..that seems kind of weird...
