Midwest Honeymoon Ideas?

SoonToBeASlabaugh, on December 28, 2016 at 1:31 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 26

So due to my FH needing emergency surgery a few weeks ago our original honeymoon plan of spending a week in New Orleans is a no go. We've looked at our finances now that Christmas is over and we just can't do it.

I don't think a honeymoon registry is appropriate so we are just going to have an adventure closer to home. We've got time to figure it out but I thought I'd ask you lovely lads and ladies for ideas!

Our wedding is in Grand Rapids, MI (which is where we live). I'm from Northern Michigan--Cadillac/Traverse City area and FH is from Detroit so we'd like to maybe get out of Michigan if we could--but if there is an adventure to be had we're up for anything!

Anyone have any ideas for honeymoons in the Midwestern area?

Trip to CO. There are tons of national parks and hiking. I've also heard the hot springs in CO are nice and romantic.

What kinds of things do you like to do? You could always go to Chicago or Milwaukee if you're into the city thing. Indianapolis is an option too.

I'm from the Indiana/Michigan line, have you ever been to brown county, Indiana? There's a beautiful state park with trails, little towns, and it's absolutely beautiful. It would be an easy drive, probably about 5-6 hours.

Upper Michigan (above the Mackinac) is beautiful if you're into waterfalls, kayaking, hiking, camping and all that good stuff.

A cabin on Lake Superior would be amazing.

What do you like to do? Are you looking for driveable places or can you still fly?

I've only lived in MN for four years but I love the state, there are definitely a bunch of places you could go whether you like city life or want a more lazy, romantic getaway.

Although, if I can just toss out a totally random option----a few years back I visited some friends in Tennessee and although I knew nothing about the state other than some bad stereotypes I really loved it there. Nashville is fun, but I loved Chattanooga (and we went down to Rock City which was such a weird place but really glad we saw it). My friends go to gaitlinburg every year and they say it's perfect for a romantic getaway, and we have a lot of brides from here that marry down there. They did have some fires this year but from what I've read, plenty of places are still standing and they welcome the tourism dollars even more now to help rebuild.

You could do a lovely weekend in Chicago. Stay in a hotel with a great view, see a show, stop at some touristy attractions, go out for some great food, take an architecture boat tour, etc.

I spent summers on Diamond Lake in White Cloud, MI. I miss it so much. There are some VRBO rentals for $80 a night right now. It's a quiet spot, about an hour west of Traverse City.

I'm loving these ideas guys! I'm writing them down and FH and I are going to sit down and look at these places! Keep 'em coming!

To answer some of the questions and to give everyone a better idea, we're for sure not opposed to flying (I LOVE to fly) if it's an awesome place but I think that FH would rather us drive to save money/not have to worry about rental cars or public transportation. Depending on distance he's not opposed. Both of us are artsy people (he studied film and works for a local news station, I studied technical theatre arts) but as far as what we like to do goes we're pretty much up for anything. We have a philosophy that life is a grand adventure and we are game for anything and any scenario.

Fellow michigander here. Taquamanon falls, pictured rocks, mackinaw are all awesome and beautiful in the fall. You could also check out porcupine mountains but that's about a 12 hour drive from Lansing. All options have hotels, cabins or campsites.

@Kiira oooh! That water! What's it like around October usually? What about when it snows. You never know with Michigan sadly...I remember having to go Trick or Treating in the snow a few times as a kid and Cadillac isn't quite as far up north and in the lower peninsula.

Hi date twin!!! I'm with @MelissaErin! Chicago is AWESOME in the Fall; there's so much to do and see! Take in a show (Hamilton might still be here), we have a beautiful lakefront and skyline. We have wonderful museums and art galleries and great theatre district!

@Sonia - Yay date twins!! And you had me at Hamilton! Haha! I love Chicagos theatre district too. Such amazing talent. My only concern with Chicago is the traffic. Whenever I've visited it's difficult to navigate. If we choose it do you or @MelissaErin or you other guys have any tips?

Check out Lake of the clouds. You may get lucky and will be able to reserve the private cabin and you get the lake to yourself. My profile picture is the scenic look out of Lake of the clouds. It would be super romantic just the two of you.
