mini-cake centerpieces?? can't decide if its a bad idea or not...

MrsNrs, on January 6, 2013 at 2:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

My mom is a professional cake baker, so ofcourse shes making my wedding cake. I was thinking, instead of traditional flower/cylinder vases (which was my initial plan) for centerpieces why not cute mini cake centerpieces with really pretty sugar flowers? Our sweetheart table will have a mini 3-tier wedding cake for us to cut.. and the tables will have their own mini-cakes (our catering company providies cake cutting so they will remove the cakes from the tables to cut them). I can't decide if this is a good idea or not... i'd have really pretty sugar flowers! like the pic below--

*edit* I saw this on a previous WW thread, how cute are these cake stands: http://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/blog/2011/10/diy-cakecookie-stands/

I think that's a lovely idea! I'd find really nice cake stands for each table.

First off, it's fantastic that your mom is a professional baker. I think the cake centerpieces will be different and who doesn't like desserts within reach? I like this idea because it allows guests to socialize with their table mates more (because they don't have to get their cake from a buffet or station). This could make visiting your guests easier as well. And it's visually appealing. I do think it's a good idea that the catering company is cutting the cake...I could see some excited guests cutting their cake before you ceremoniously cut yours.

Great job for thinking outside of the box...or in this case, vase cylinder.

I officiated a wedding for friends. At the reception, we were able to pick what table we wanted to sit at based on the cake on each table (with a sign saying what it was, i.e., yellow cake, raspberry filling, chocolate frosting). Each cake was on a vintage cake pedestal plate borrowed from relatives. So unique and very pretty.

Hahahaha thanks ADM! yea i'm not big on centerpieces AT ALL... only reason i'm having something more than just a single candle is because my mom is all about the decor. she put herself in charge of decor/cake because I just didn't care about centerpieces... who goes to wedding thinking "ooo i wonder what the centerpieces r going to be!!" this way.. i feel like i'm saving my mom loads of money by not having to buy cylinders or flowers or whatever crazy idea she has. instead of one huge cake just little ones that would add up to a big one... and when i say huge, i mean huge. she made a 15cake wedding cake for my brother's wedding... she goes BEYOND everything for us lol and her cakes are soooooooooo tasttyyyy. gosh i miss her.♥ i also think they would be easier to decorate.. since the sugar flowers are already made. for a huge cake, its so much detail in the frosting.. takes hours! i want her to relax with us and not be away decorating a huge cake when i'm getting ready

I LOVE this idea! I was a guest at an event and the centerpieces at each table were cakes. It was a HUGE hit!!! Go for it!

I love it. Another bride on here did a cake on every table and she baked them herself. I think it is a really cute idea.

I have also seen where the bride and groom go to every table and cut and serve the cake, and this is when they do their mingling. I thought this was also a very cute idea.

Love the idea. A friend of mine did that. They had cheesecake, and did one on every table.

I love this idea. It's unique and I am sure your mother can match cake flowers to your colors. I can't wait to see pics of your mother's creations. Here is what a quick search gave me. I think they are gorgeous. I absolutely love the second one. It could be done inexpensively by buying the vases at Dollar Tree.

It's cute. You could also do cookies, cupcakes and flower petals. Be sure to have a special cake set up for you both to cut into.

My cousin did this at her wedding but instead of taking the cakes away to be cut she had the couple at the table who had been married/together the longest cut the cake together. it was ADORABLE and really cute/fun for the everyone.

Another bride did this and it went over very well! And I am sure your guests will love it - who doesn't like more cake! If there is any left you can always box it up for them to take home with them. Great idea! Now when should I expect my invitation LOL!

P.S. GO AIR FORCE! Dad and brother both served in the Air Force so there is a special place in my heart for Air Force brides.
