Mismatched bridesmaid dresses?

Molly, on April 16, 2019 at 10:43 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Hey ladies!

I am trying to nail down bridesmaid dresses with my matron and maid of honor. I sent them a few ideas but I am having trouble deciding. I would like mismatched but I can't decide to have 1 color in all different styles or have 3 styles in 3 different colors and have each person choose their favorites. I would then assign each person their 1st or 2nd favorite, depending on the line up and which color they choose. I would not want a clump of 1 color close together.

I am thinking I would do shades of blue (navy, slate blue, sky blue) or maybe throw a mauve or rose color in there.

What is the best way to go about mismatched dresses? HELP!!

We did all the same color and dress, but I found some cute photos of mismatched bridesmaids dresses.

It really depends on what you want. I was going to give my girls a choice between 2 similar dresses in the same color (the BM dresses will be the same color as the MOH dress in the picture) but when I asked them which one they wanted to wear, the line just didn't work right. MOH and 1 FSIL wanted the one with the slit, 1 FSIL, future niece, and friend wanted the one with the cross on top. I tired every which way to manipulate the line up (aside from not having MOH standing next to me) and 1 girl would always end up not getting the dress she wanted. MOH and I had already discussed her having something that would allow her to stand out from the other 4 so I told the 1 FSIL that she would have to wear the dress with the cross on top. She really didn't mind, like I said... the dresses are very similar, and MOH will be the only one with the slit (which we are going to add matching lace to close it).

You could really do it either way. We are doing a gradient from burgundy to mauve. Everyone will have a different color and choose their own style. I think it will look great, but I’m also not a fan of the matchy matchy look.

I know to each is to own but I too am not one for the uniformity of all the same bridesmaid dresses. I went with the same color but different styles. I think either would look beautiful so I would go with whichever you like best!

We chose to do one color, and then I chose 6 or 7 styles I liked, and asked my girls to figure out which one they liked best, but to please not have 2 in the same dress - as it happened, when they got the styles, they all liked different ones, so it was really easy (there were 3 of them).

It's so tough! I'm doing mismatched, but the same color for all bridesmaids (rose gold sequin) in different styles. My MoH is wearing blush sequin, and I let her pick whatever dress she wanted.

For my seven bridesmaids, I ID'd 10 different dresses I liked and asked them to rank their top three choices. I went through them and assigned them one of their choices. One of my girls was upset I gave her her #2 choice and found a different dress from the Etsy seller and asked if she could do that style instead. I really didn't like it as much as the chosen dress but didn't want to make waves, so I told her it was fine.

I know plenty of brides who give their girls a specific color/designer, but I wanted a bit more control. I think you just have to decide what kind of look you like—different colors/different styles or same color/different styles. I'd search Pinterest for mismatched looks and see what you tend to gravitate more toward.

My girls were mismatched - 2 in each of our 3 wedding colors. I asked which of the three colors each one of them preferred - and the only ones who cared which color they wore were the ones in blue, so it worked well.

Like others have said it depends on what you want. I am doing one color and they can pick the style they like. A friend of mine wanted colors in shades of light purple/mauve, blues and grey. She asked me if I'd help organize this, she is in med school and had 10 bridesmaids so she barely had time. If you are swamped for time totally okay to ask for help with a thing like this I think. It was easy though because none of the girls had a strong preference on what color they wore. We had a shared google doc that listed the colors, how many we needed of each (2 per color), and some various options (Lulu's, BirdyGrey, Nordstrom, etc.) They could buy from whatever fit in their budget. The one issue that did come up was the lineup. She had the lineup planned and when we took pictures before the ceremony quickly realized that the original lineup didn't work with the colors people bought. The photographer redid it and it worked out fine. No biggie but she was the chillest bride ever and none of us cared about lineup anyways.

I honestly always liked the look of mismatched colors and styles. When we were planning on having a traditional wedding (we're now eloping), I was just going to give my ladies a color palette and have them choose whatever they felt comfortable in.

This is my favorite mix-matched wedding. I love the lace dresses, so that's what my girls got. One will be wearing purple, the other burgundy.

I only have 2 girls in my party, so they are each wearing a different color. One in Navy and one in Burgundy. The only thing that is even closely similar with them is the neckline. They are both halter top and full length. But that is where the similarities end.

My girls will all be wearing the same color, but I've given them 6 or 7 different styles to choose from. They are all 3 very different body types, so I wanted them all to pick what they would be most comfortable in, and feel beautiful.

One color and different dresses would be much easier to pull off and less stressful for you.

Mine would be mismatched color and style, I let them choose the style themselves (as long as it's at or below the knee) and One will be wearing burgundy the other a mustard/Marigold color.

I am doing mismatched dresses and honestly I thought it felt a bit difficult at first but I ended up going with Brideside which made it super simple for me and getting our bridesmaids to place their orders - here’s the result of the mix and match styles everyone picked!

I was THIS close to doing matching dresses, but ended up telling them to choose a floor length in the same color. That way, it won't look strange or "clumpy" with color (I felt the same!) and there will be texture, yet continuity with color.

That’s exactly what I’m doing! I told all my girls to order off kennedyblue.com and I had already ordered swatches and fell in love with the cornflower color. So they each have a different styled dress that fits each of their body types & budgets in one consistent color.

My girls are wearing the same color and style dress...but, only because they all liked the same one.
I personally like eclectic things and told them they could wear coordinating colors because I want them to feel pretty too. It was all up to them.
In your case, I don't think you can go wrong whatever you choose. Sounds lovely!
