Considering purchasing mismatched china for place settings.

I am wondering what I absolutely need to include in the setting if we are having a casual, family style meal. Can I get away with just a dinner plate, fork, knife, and water goblet? Do I really need a salad plate, bread plate, different forks, wine glasses, etc??? Guests can grab wine from the bar. Dessert/coffee will be self serve with plain dinnerware from a dessert/coffee bar.

We will probably have 250-300 guests. I understand this will take time to source, but I actually enjoy thrift store hunting. I plan to spend $.50-1/plate, which I have seen at my local thrift stores, etc. and will fit in my budget if I only need to purchase the dinner plate. If I need to purchase the other plates, then I'd have to skip it. I'll also research renting.

I could sell the plates after to recoup some $.

Thanks for your kind and helpful advice!

This was a very large job hunting for china but worth it as my daughter was very pleased. I think the mismatched idea can work as long as you keep a common denominator. We kept the plates blue and white and tied together with gold chargers although if had to do again would not have done damask overlays as it was too busy. But vintage china can be very beautiful and is personal preference. My daughters guest loved the china and commented on it frequently. We did not have bussers and clearing tables and rinsing was a challenge. My daughters wedding went from a 150 person venue wedding to a 40 close family and friends backyard wedding with me, Mom being the chef, decorator, busser etc. Very difficult. This was a little tacky but unfortunately I could not come up with another alternative, I placed a 25 gallon cooler full of soapy water near bussing area i created with a cart a garbage can for scraping plates, out of photo areas . I was able to bus the tables quickly and scrape plates and place in soapy water so plates did not get yucky! I hope yours turned out amazing!

I am doing the same thing with mismatched China. I am doing dinner and dessert plates. I have hit the local Goodwill & thrift stores and have been able to get almost all of them in under a month. $1 (or less) for dinner and $.50 (or less) for dessert. I can't wait!
