Missing tooth

Kip, on December 17, 2017 at 2:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 17

So my tooth broke clean in half and had to be removed. With my wedding being in April I am not sure an implant can be done that quickly and be done well. Any one know of any temp options that wouldn't be terrible. I really don't want to be a toothless bride. It's the 4th over from the front and not extremely visible but does show in pictures. I have not ask the dentist yet but will just starting to stress.

Why don't you think they can make a replacement in 4 months? That's actually a really long turnaround time, surely they can

You can definitely get that fixed in a month. Make an apt with your dentist asap

My Mom had an implant done in early July and didn't get a permanent tooth until early Nov. I think there's a 3 month waiting period, before the permanent gizmo and new tooth on top of it, can be put in.

The dentist gave her the option of him making her (I think it was called ) a flipper, to fill-in the gap, but it would have cost $$$ and she really didn't care, so she went without.

The dentist can make you a flipper. These are much like a removable partial denture, but usually less sturdy, less bulky, and less expensive. They do not alter surrounding teeth when they make a flipper.

@Chip, when I had implants done, I had to wait six months for the posts to be secure in the jaw before they added the crown.

Agree with Muriel. There's a product called instasmile, and similar others, that will do the trick temporarily.

You can have a temp in days. Don't wait.

Your implant will go in and you'll have a temp until the tissue heals around the implant. If you need someone good in NJ, let me know.

With my limited knowledge of dental work, I'd say you have plenty of time.

I had a crown on my front tooth after chipping it as a kid. At 6 weeks before the wedding my original root canal in that tooth failed and I had to have a second one done, and that meant getting a new crown. I got really lucky trying a new dentist because the temps I had put in actually looked better than my original crown. With 2 weeks to the wedding the implant came in, my dentist tried to make it work but wasn't happy with the quality and didn't feel comfortable permanently cementing it. Back to the lab it went and unfortunately a new one didn't arrive until I think a day or two after our wedding. I ended up having that temp for our wedding and honeymoon; in total I probably had it in for 5 weeks by the time I was able to get back to the dentist. With the way my tooth chipped I was able to keep my original tooth and I didn't need a post, so I'm not sure how much longer the process is with a post. Just make sure you go to someone who can make a good temp if for some reason it take many months to come in.

You'll be fine. I have 6 porcelain veneers and when they break they put a temporary plastic one in that looks really for a week and usually by then the permanent one is ready to do. Do not stress.

Have your dentist make you a flipper. I work for a general dentist who also specializes in implants and for it to last it takes from 9 months to 1 year from start to finish Smiley smile

I have seen places that do cheap and fast implants but I really don’t want a cheap implant in my mouth. I am fine with the temp cover (flipper?) I wasn’t aware they did that. It’s not a front tooth so as long as the temp was not a off color it would make it look normal. Thanks for the info. I really don’t want a toothless grin or odd closed smile look in all my pictures.

I Actually just lost a tooth (I had a baby tooth still, adult tooth was never there) and just visited the oral surgeon about an implant this week. If you get on it now you should have the whole process compete in about 3 months including healing time from implant and having the crown placed on it. With a little time to spare for your wedding! Good luck!

ETA: my tooth is also 4 back from the front. So weird!

My front tooth broke due to a root canal gone wrong, my two front teeth are fillings due to my sister bashing my head off the floor and busting my mouth. (She's a real peach *insert eye roll*)

I'm actually seeing my dentist Wednesday to discuss plans to do some work and repair those teeth.

You definitely have time for at least a temporary one. Smiley smile

I've actually contemplated doing the instasmile thing in the event I can't get work done before the wedding.

It depends on the surgery and the post.... it can be anywhere from 4-8months...

I have an implant, and I did the insta smile for the wedding too haha. So the implant was done many years ago, and I can't remember how long the entire process took but it was several months. I had the post put in first and since it was a back tooth, I didn't get a temp thing put in because no one could see it. The crown came several months later after healing, and my current dentist and Ortho are very happy with how well it has held up for the last 10+ years. Definitely pick a reputable dentist and don't rush the process as you you want it to last as long as possible.

My Instasmile was not related to the implant at all, but was instead because my front teeth moved around once I lost my retainers. I couldn't stand the way it looked in pictures but didn't think I had time for an orthodontic treatment before the wedding. The insta smile was totally worth it for me, and they do make them for people who are missing teeth as well. It does look a bit fake close up, but in pictures it was fabulous and you could not tell at all. I did have quite a bit of a lisp with it in but again worth it for pictures for me. You also have to do your own impressions for that and they aren't too bad but impressions are not really fun. It is pricey so depends on how worried you would be about the tooth showing etc. I am currently doing orthodontic treatment and just started Invisalign last week actually to correct my front teeth haha I'm still working on my teeth Smiley smile

Yes I agree go with the flipper. Just make sauce you go to the lab, so they can do a color match. That way it will look natural. Implants are the best route but can take about 6, months and expensive.

You should be able to get that done on time! My mom fell down the stairs and had to get all of her front teeth replaced and the process only took about month (for all of the teeth) so it should be a lot quicker for you. Don't know if money/insurance is a factor in your situation though... so sorry that happened to you and hope it's not too painful!!
