Mocktail Hour - No Hors d'oeuvre?

RY, on January 16, 2021 at 5:52 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

Hello,

We are inviting about 175 guests and most will have to drive about an hour or so to get to our venue.

Our ceremony will begin at 4:30pm followed by a mocktail hour (no alcoholic drinks) served at 5:30pm with our reception beginning at 6:30pm with dinner at 6:45pm and an ice cream truck rolling in around 8:00pm.

There is a two hour gap before guests can get to eat (+1 hour from driving).

However, we don't have the budget to provide hors d'oeuvres.

Would that be an issue?

You always could always just have fruit, cheese, vegetable and cracker trays during the mocktail hour if that fits in your budget. It doesn't necessarily have to be actual cooked foods

I agree with Yasmine. I've been to weddings where they just had cheese and crackers and I was happy. But offering nothing at all might get your guests hAngry lol

I agree with the others. I think you need to provide them with something, especially since they are making a decent drive for you.

Agreed cheese and fruit at least. If not your guests are going to be hungry and cranky! I know I would be because I would expect there to be food at the wedding. And if dinner STARTS at 6 or 6:30, then your guests will either have to wait in line for a buffet or wait to get served and that usually takes a while.
I definitely think you need something. Doesn’t have to be super fancy

Cheese and crackers and fruit at minimum. Why do you have such a long gap?

Why is the gap so long? I definitely agree with PPs, I would serve cheese, crackers, and fruit at minimum. These can be purchased very cheaply at a place like Costco.

Based on your info..your ceremony is at 4:30..most nonreligious ceremonies are 15-20 minutes..30 mins including a receiving line. Putting you at 5pm. You said travel to the reception is 1 hour.. That makes social hour start at 6 with a 7pm dinner. What part of the reception do you have starting at 6:30 with a 6:45 dinner?

I'd skip the ice cream truck and provide cheap little nibbles during mocktail hour.

Our choice for the ice cream truck is because it's actually really meaningful to us! Also, we will be cutting a one layer cake with no additional desserts other than the itty bitty ones from our caterer. Most of our guests are familiar with the ice cream truck and frequent there often (which usually takes about 45min to an hour to get for a big majority of them). It's a favorite!

But seeing how everyone is suggesting the munchies, I will consider to make budget for them. Thank you (-:

Our ceremony involves both religious and cultural elements! And the ceremony and reception is all at one place. It takes about an hour for most people to get there. For the 6:30-6:45, we are having a 'faux exit' with sparklers as part of our introduction into the reception tent (with photos & lighting sparklers, I added in a cushion of time).

Thank you everybody for the suggestions!

I did think I should prepare something but because of our budget I wasn't sure. Now, I think I most definitely do since guest experience is really important for me! Still getting used to this whole planning stuff - it's only been about a month and a half haha

I totally agree as well! It's great that the ice-cream truck is meaningful to you, but you said there will already be other desserts. I'd think that guests would much rather have appetizers during your long gap than ice-cream on top of other sweets at the end of the night.

Be sure the sparkler event is clarified to your guests to avoid confusion
