Moisturizer for sensitive skin?

Jennifer, on March 21, 2022 at 6:53 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 25
Hi ladies! I’m hoping someone can give me some advice. When I did my makeup trial, my MUA recommended I get a heavy moisturizer to help my makeup go on smoothly on the day.

I’ve tried a few of the big brands day/night cream (Olay, L’Oréal, etc) but with each one I’ve broken out in hives so I look like a pimply teenager within a few hours. I’m not really into makeup so I’m a bit besides myself! I find the facial skincare section of the drug store super intimidating…I feel like I’m just guessing (and literally paying for it). Any suggestions on what to try that might not make me go all red and spotty?

For moisturizer, I like Tarte brand. A bit more expensive, but I have really acne prone skin and it hasnt made me break out

I would probably go to an Ulta or Sephora and see if you can test some on your skin before buying. Another option would be to see a dermatologist and see what they recommend.

Also, to add, I have sensitive skin, although not as severe a reaction as you have, and I'm a fan of the Neutrogena hydroboost for sensitive skin.

I have rosacea and sensitive skin and here’s what I use daily: La Roche-Posay Toleraine Hydrating gentle cleanser, Aveeno Protect+Hydrate SPF 60 sunscreen in the morning, and Vanicream Moisturizing Cream for Sensitive Skin at night. I also have normal skin (ie neither dry nor oily), so just keep that in mind too.

All of the known brands like L’Oreal , Olay and Neutrogena contain a ton of chemicals. I would try a Natural moisturizer such as Everyone or Alba.
I use Everyone and have no issues. It has good ingredients.

I haven’t actually! To be honest, I assumed more expensive was better with face cream. I might get some and give it a try (carefully)…

Thanks Hannah! I’ll have a look at Neutrogena. I’m in the UK actually (destination wedding in FL) so no Ultas or Sephoras here unfortunately. I’m sure there’s an equivalent though, I’ll have a look. Thanks for the suggestions!

It’s the fine sunscreen I’ve found that sinks in really well instead of staying greasy on top of my skin or pilling. The Vanicream is my heavier duty moisturizer that I would recommend if you don’t mind missing the SPF.

I second Cetaphil! My dermatologist recommended it and the lack of scents and dyes makes it less likely to have interactions.

My skin is some of the pickiest around, and I have had huge success with the Clinique Dramatically different moisturizers. They have a few different bases and you can add serum insert pumps to them (the only one my skin didn't like was the green one that it doesn't look like they carry anymore, but the blue one is amazing). I also love their Moisture Surge line!!

Cetaphil was my go to in college when I was on a budget!

Cetaphil or Cerave were both recommended by my dermatologist. I'd suggest talking to a dermatologist about recommended products before buying anything else though. They might be able to recommend something that would be better-tailored to your skin type.

Hi! I have sensitive skin and a LONG list of skin allergies. My skin has been sensitive my whole life (my mom said I'd break out in hives if anything other than organic cotton touched me as an infant). My go to is Cerave Moisturizing lotion specifically. Keep in mind that different lotions within a brand can have different fragrances/ingredients that might bother you (fragrances tend to cause issues for people with sensitive skin). Honestly, when I am unsure I go for baby products (baby Cerave is also amazing) as they usually are unscented and have fewer harsh ingredients. Additionally, my allergist always recommends aquaphor/vaseline for right before bed to lock in moisture. Vanicream is also an amazing brand for people with skin sensitivities (I use their cleanser, shampoo, conditioner, and hair gel). I am by no means a professional but I suggest an allergist over a dermatologist because hives sound like they could be an allergy, not a sensitive skin issue. Getting a patch test really changed my quality of life! Best of luck and I hope you find something that works for you!

I’ve thought about Clinique but was a bit shy of picking another expensive one after my last experience (still broken out in hives from trying Olay two days ago). I might give it a look though! I did a few makeup trials and broke out from my MAC trial but not Clinique so it might work! Thanks for the confidence boost to give it a try Smiley smile

Ohh! Baby products are SUCH a good idea. Will definitely have a look at that! And yeah, it’s definitely an allergic reaction. Itchy hives all over my face for days. What a pain!

It's a little bit tough to try a ton of new stuff if your skin is finicky and your big day is coming soon, so if you can afford it, I would consult a dermatologist! Also just keep staying as hydrated as you can leading up to the big day.

I have eczema and can get flaky and oily at the same time. I've been using Korean skincare products over the years which can have some really gentle but effective ingredients/products for moisture. I would also double check product ingredients on CosDNA.com to see if there are any major acne triggers on things (my skin can usually handle things up to ratings up to 2 under acne but I absolutely stray away from anything that is a 4!).

Your mileage may vary, (like I can use Cetaphil, but some Cerave products absolutely breaks me out which is so weird), but I layer things on like:

    - Facial oil (I know, it sounds WILD if you have pimply or oily skin, but it really helps control your skin); I personally use The Ordinary's Rose-Hip seed oil. I've also used tarte's Maracuja Oil which was really nice too!
    - A light moisturizer
    - A serum with niacinamide or hyaluronic acid which can help lock in moisture. I use Glow Recipe's Watermelon Dew Drops Serum.
    - Then if you need it, a creamy moisturizer, like Drunk Elephant's Protini Peptide. I use one of The History of Whoo's creams (but this can be expensive if you don't know it'll work for you long term).

Sometimes in the winter I use Cerave's Eczema Creamy Oil too which is more for body but works really well on my face. Things to consider are not necessarily using one heavy cream, but layering lighter products that work for you (like mists too, sometimes I double up on Glow Recipe's Watermelon line with their hydrating mist too) and possibly using a primer before the makeup (like Tatcha's Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen).

I know it won't do anything if you do end up breaking out in terms of your skin, but if you buy from Ulta they'll take your return - even if you used it - and give you a full refund. So at least there would be that peace of mind when trying out a more expensive product!

    Good luck, friend!
