Mom’s preserved wedding dress

Krystal, on August 22, 2021 at 11:32 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8
Does anyone know if preserved wedding dresses shrink over time? I recently tried on my mom’s 34+ year old wedding dress. The tag said it was a size 8 but this thing couldn’t even zip up! Does anyone know if wedding dresses shrink over time or was she just really small when she got married?

It may have shrunk a bit, but sizes were also different in the past. A size 8 back then may not be the same measurements as a size 8 today.

Sizes have gotten much larger over time. Marilyn Monroe wore a size 12, but in today’s sizing she would be a size 6.

A size 8 from thirty years ago is definitely not the same as a size 8 today. 🙂

Sizes have changed over the last 30+ years, but bridal sizing is also very different from street clothes sizing.

This is something of a myth. She generally had her clothes custom made, and like all of us, her weight did fluctuate, so it's very difficult to say what she would have been in a a street size, and they were often so tight-fitting that they were sewn onto her body, but the white dress she wore in The Seven Year Itch was recently auctioned off and was put on a mannequin that was a size 2, but they were still unable to zip up the dress as the mannequin was too big. I know articles always say she would have been a size six today, but this simply isn't accurate, and you can tell when you look at her measurements. She had a 22 inch waist which would be below a size 0 in modern jean sizes, for example.

It is true though that sizing has changed a lot since the 70s!

Krystal, your mum's dress isn't likely to have shrunk, but bridal sizing is wild, so I don't think you can take the size 8 tag as being the same as a modern one. Even between 2001 and now, sizing has changed.

If you are truly curious, your best bet would be to measure the dress and compare it to a modern size chart. You can probably also find a vintage chart to compare to.

Today a bridal size 8 would be a street size 4 (bridal sizes are typically two sizes bigger than street sizes). Maybe it was the same back then?

Like others have said, sizes are definitely different and not universal. You also have to consider if your mom had alterations done to her dress before she got married. Sure the tag says size 8, but she may have had it taken in a bit so it wouldn't be a true size 8.

Similar thing happened to me. I tried on my mom's dress for fun and it was a size 10. It zipped but felt tight. I've been fitting in sizes 6 and 8 mostly.
