Monarch vs. Painted Ladies Butterfly Release

I am going to do a butterfly release, it is decided so please spare me any comments against it. I HAVE done my research, it is not harmful to the butterflies, it's not an ecological or environmental issue where I live. I am going to do a butterfly release, it is decided so please spare me any comments against it. I HAVE done my research, it is not harmful to the butterflies, it's not an ecological or environmental issue where I live. (they are native and helpful to the area), they are allowed at my venue, and yes I know some die but I know the procedure for how to best have a successful one and it will work out well for my area/time of year and resources to keep them cool and warm the day of, etc.

SO all that said, let's get to the topic - so, there are two main options to release: the Monarchs or the Painted Ladies. Monarchs are bigger and more expensive, the Ladies are much smaller but more affordable.

My question is simply this, to those who have seen these before, which ones were they? I want to know if the Painted Ladies are big enough to have nice photos, good look flying, or if it really is worth it to pay the extra for the monarchs. (feel free to also suggest good place to purchase)

I have heard all of the issues, I don't want to hear the issues, I only want to know about the look of painted ladies and if they look big enough. If you don't have anything to share related to that please don't post anything. Thank you

Judging by these posts - probably all your pictures will feature guests screaming, running, and diving under chairs to get away from the hellish butterflies. It will look like a Godzilla trailer. Smiley tongue

Um. When the World Wildlife Fund says they're endangered, it's so. So keep you little denial going. It's cruel. Whatevs.

You guys are ridiculous and Karen you're just dumb. If it was endangering them to do this it would be illegal! The farms that sell them raise them for this purpose. Thanks a lot everyone for wasting my time and being of NO help whatsoever (aside from ONE comment) I thought this forum was supposed to be a support group for brides. Instead you're just releasing all your crazy bridezilla $hit onto me. I hope your weddings are better than your attitudes!

@Marcy: It is very well known that butterfly releases are harmful to the insects. Furthermore, guests hate it when a bug is flying on them at a wedding. Nuff said.

It would be helpful if you posted a pic of each butterfly. I am not going to google what they look like.

I don't know what the size of a painted lady is. I would call the company and find out how big they are in comparison. Someone had the idea to get them as cocoons. I think that is a good plan. My daughters class did it. The kids watched them grow and come out of the cocoons. When they were ready they released them. It was pretty since they were all ready to fly. That does mean that they aren't going to be stuck in a box possibly being sluggish or dead.

As for them being poisonous, it is true. They are. But who on earth wouldn't notice a large butterfly in their food? They aren't exactly small.

Have you ever seen this happen? I can tell you why the answer is no. Because it doesn't. You open the box, four fly out, you shake the box, 46 more plop to the ground.

I'd go for the puppy release.

You will be able to see either butterfly during a release so just pick your favorite and be done.

My poisonous comment wasn't necessarily about a whole butterfly in someone's soup. I was more if one accidentally got caught in something in the food prep area and then pieces of it ended up. I wasn't trying to be unhelpful with my original comment.

Regardless of whether its harmful to them, the environment, your guests, etc.. . . you are still using a living creature for "appearance", "look", and "aesthetic". And however you try to spin it, its disgusting.

@Celia - That is basically the sum of it! They all plop and look like blowing turds on the ground!!!

They plop and die if you don't follow the instructions to the letter. If you do it properly a very minimal # will be dead. Company even provides guarantees. And who the hell hates a butterfly to land on them. People love that. You guys are nuts!

Just ick. I don't want anything landing on me except a poodle. Maybe a dachshund.

Don't forget that someone has to follow the instructions and then manage them that day. If someone asked me, I'd decline. I've done tequila shadings, paint pouring, giant clouds of noise, and plate throwing at the end, but I'd say no to the butterflies.

I would still hope whoever is prepping the food would notice a large butterfly. I haven't ever seen food prep at a ceremony in any case. Could not tell what your intention was. Not everyone has been around monarch butterflies so maybe you don't know how large they are.

In any case, you can argue with the OP about what a bad choice it is, but she made her decision. Why not try to make it as good as it could possibly be? Better to hatch them so they have a better chance than keep them in a little box.
