Money Dance

CourtneyBrittain, on July 28, 2019 at 10:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 32
FH has said he really wants to do a money dance, so how exactly does it work? How many songs are played, do we need to announce it ahead of time so people have cash on them? Idk how it works!

I would be careful money dances are really frowned upon. I think if it is part of your culture it is good.

Thank you. Do you have any advice on how they usually work?

Is this a part of either of your cultures?

The ones I've seen, each of you dance with different people for maybe 30 seconds each. The person puts money, it was $1 when I did it, but that was a long time ago, so it's probably more now, into a container, or gives it to the person coordinating the dance. I'm thinking it took about 20-25 minutes to get through everyone who wanted to participate.

So, basically, you 2 take center stage, people line up with their money, give it to whoever is timing/coordinating the dance, and then go and dance with each of you (men with you, women with FH) for a short time. How long it takes depends on how many people are attending the reception, and taking part.

I have no idea if it's announced ahead of time, so maybe someone else can chime in on that.

Thanks you! 20-25 mins seems like an awfully long time, I thought it would be one or two songs 😅

No, but where FH is from it’s just a fun thing. He’s been to several weddings where it was just a fun thing, it wasn’t part of their cultures either.

    You're Welcome!

To give you a better idea, that particular reception had a little over 200 people in attendance. So yes, it took awhile!

I've only seen it once. I think there was a bucket that a bridesmaid collected money from and there was a line for people to dance with bride and groom. It went on for 25 minutes or so and the DJ called out to switch.

Not sure how you would announce this before the wedding. Some people may have cash, some might not.

I'm not going to give you etiquette/cultural lecture. If you do decide on it, keep it short. From the one I've seen no other people were able to dance so guests can get restless waiting!

The one I've seen was a bridesmaid/groomsman stood by the line and collected the dollar Bill's in the bucket. Every 30 seconds or so in the songs the DJ called 'next' and they rotated the people through the line. Some people went several times. Some went from the bride line to the grooms line.
This was many moons ago so that's all I really remember about it lol

    Thank you!

i know it’s usually a culture thing, but FH has been to several weddings in his family and they’ve done it and it’s one of very few things he’s requested

Asking for money is rude. Selling your company on the dance floor is beyond rude. This is not part of your culture, so there's really no excuse for it.

Your DJ will announce that the couple will now have a dollar dance or money dance. Your MOH and his BM will stand on the side collecting the money and then your guests will take turns dancing with you and FH. Each guests gets about 30 seconds so depending on how many guests you have and how many will actually participate 1-2 songs are usually enough.

We are having 2 songs played for our dollar dance.

I have been to.lots of wedding receptions with this being done. My first wedding we made 110.00 dollars from the money dance. The guests would pay whatever amount they wanted which would get them a shot and a dance. We only danced maybe 10-15 seconds per guest. I thought it was fun and a way to thank the guests who danced. Me and FH are still thinking if we will have this dance or not

Also we didn't announce anything before reception and we played songs that had money in lyrics or title
