Mosquito and bug control for outdoor wedding?

Lindsey, on March 24, 2021 at 10:30 AM Posted in Planning 0 10
This didn’t cross my mind until now, our ceremony and reception will be outdoors (backyard wedding) in May and mosquitos are bad here. I’m probably going to contact a company soon to look into having our yard treated, does anyone know how much that costs?! I’m also planning on having some citronella candles burning, I’m just so worried people (or the food) will be swarmed with bugs!!!

Depending on your location it could cost you anywhere from 500 to 1000$ But it mostly goes off of how large your grounds are.
It might also not be a bad idea to check out some of the electric zapper light poles. in my personal experience the citronella candles do not do anything at all

You could always just have a bottle of bug spray out if people wanna use it. or bands are really inexpensive to give to people.

It will definitely depend on how large the area being treated is. I would also consider purchasing some thermacell repellers, I am also having an outdoor ceremony & reception and I will probably end up purchasing some. They are supposed to create a 15ft bubble for repelling mosquitoes - I don't know how effective they are personally, but reviews are positive.

I was going to suggest the repellant bands as well! I think that with some electrical zapper poles surrounding the outer area would be good!

Repellent bracelets do not work for a majority of people. Go for heavy duty Off! spray and citronella candles. Lemongrass is also good to repel them. Interestingly enough, if you have fans going (odd for outdoors) it keeps bugs away.

Have food covered in foil until ready to serve.

I would have bug spray if anyone wanted it. then have the off vent clips on the table near the food and drinks that way it makes the bubble around the food. you could also use some tiki torches they make some really nice ones now that aren't wood i have a glass one i put on my table in the summer

Start a service ASAP! Depending where you live and how you define bad, it can take a couple months of treatment to reduce mosquitos. Avoid or eliminate any standing water in your yard (bird baths, puddles, buckets, coolers/ice bins). Another thing that will help is wind, so if you can somehow rent or incorporate fans that can help. Mosquitos can’t fly very well so they’ll just float away in the wind if it’s strong enough. 😊

What dress code are you suggesting? Some people might not be comfortable with having to apply bug repellent in cocktail or more formal wear.
    Good luck!

The off mosquito incense sticks work really well, much better than citronella candles in my opinion. And definitely provide bug spray.

Lindsey, did you end up spraying? We are exploring the same thing for our September wedding. Wanted to know if you thought it was worth it.
