Most affordable route for decor signs?

Jennifer, on July 1, 2019 at 3:32 PM Posted in Style and Décor 1 18

Hi everyone!

I'm starting to plan for some of the smaller decor items, and I definitely want a few signs! I'm thinking a large "welcome" sign, as well as some smaller ones (bar menu, unplugged ceremony, escort cards), and I've mostly been looking at Etsy as a source. I'm just curious what everyone else did for these items and if there's significant cost savings one way or another!

For example, would it be better to purchase the whole sign from Etsy, or purchase a PDF and have it made into a sign at a print shop? Is it better to DIY, and if so, how did you do it?

Thanks so much in advance! Smiley smile

I purchased a PDF and printed it for cheap elsewhere.
Some people I've seen DIY it nicely. But I know for myself I probably wouldn't have been able to aha

I am DIYing all my signs. It's cheaper for me because I already have all the supplies I need. I have wood, stain, paint, hardware to assemble, cutting tools, etc. I also have a cricut so I can cut out stencils to do the lettering. If you don't already have a lot of the materials, it may be cheaper to buy depending on what kind of signs you are looking for! The print shop may be the cheapest way to go.

I think it depends on what kind of signs you're looking for. Obviously printed signs in frames are much cheaper than wood or acrylic signs. Vistaprint has some sign designs that you could have printed onto foam board for fairly cheap. The next cheapest option would probably be purchasing files from Etsy and having them printed somewhere like Staples and put them in an inexpensive frame.

Hi - so I actually purchased a ton of signs. To help reduce cost I did it two ways. All chalkboard signs I bought from Hobby Lobby. I waited to they had a 1/2 sale. I got 7x flat table board (which needed easels, but I didn't buy the easels at that time), 2x free standing table chalkboard, 2x chalkboards with ground stakes, 2x medium free standing floor chalkboard easels, and 1x large chalkboard for $150.00. You will have to season the chalkboards. From then a friend of mine did the small signs by writing by hand. For the large signs, I ordered 5x decals from Esty (it came to $80 for all with shipping) & then attached (do not season large chalkboard signs for decals) if you use chalkboard tell the seller, as there is a more adhesive decal that they can use, and make sure that the chalkboard is super clean (I used Windex).

Check out any bridal groups on facebook as well!! I got a lot of chalkboards and signs that people were getting rid of for VERY cheap. Most of my chalkboards were either blank or I just wiped them clean. If you are crafty, making them yourself is not super difficult, but if youre not youll save time and effort just to buy them. Im either handwriting things or using a cricut for others. Im also pretty fluent in Photoshop, so Ive made a few signs that Im just going to print on cardstock and put in frames. Things like our signature drinks sign and things like that.

Hobby Lobby or Michaels will be your friend, they always have sales going on. I was just at HL on Saturday and all their wedding collection was 50% off plus they have all of their clearance marked down as well.

So, I just put up a huge post about how to save, and have a little something on there about signs. But I will elaborate more here.

I think alot depends on how you want your signs to look. I found signs you can get printed on eBay from anywhere between $8 and $25 however, this is for the print out only. I found a blog that mentioned attaching the printouts 2 a piece of cardboard and setting it on an easel or creating something else for it to lean against.
I personally found a sale at Michael's for 8 galvanized metal signs with a stand already attached to the back for $8. They measured 14x8. I qlso bought the 8x8 ones in matching metal as well. Im having the vinyl lettering printed on ebay for each sign which runs about $2 to $7 per sign. However this is just the rustic look were going for and it also turned out way cheaper then going thru Etsy or the other sites I found for signs.
I attempted to hand paint the signs but didnt like the way it turned out.

The other reason I liked this route is because I can resell the signs after the wedding on ebay or FB marketplace since the vinyl lettering can be removed.
    Hope this helps!

I love the idea of the cardstock menus in the frames - I just want people to quickly and easily see what beer and wine we'll have Smiley smile Thank you so much!

Oh, forgot to add that it should average about $5 to $8 per sign total.

I bought blank signs and my mom has a machine that prints vinyl. We decided what we wanted then to say, printed it out on the vinyl, and stuck it to the signs. You could also by some stencils and paint the signs yourself. We did find a small unplugged ceremony sign for cheap at Hobby Lobby too.

I bought Etsy templates. The smaller ones I printed at work, and had my larger sign printed with another vendor when it they were on sale.

We went inexpensive with our signs and they look awesome! Here's what we did.... Go to yard sales/thrift stores, etc. and buy large pieces of cheap art. It doesn't matter what the art looks like. Try to go for ones with awesome frames. Then, buy a can of chalkboard paint (can come in black, white, or colors). Depending on the type of art, you may be able to paint the chalkboard paint directly on to the picture. It may take two coats. If the art is not able to be painted, you can take the art work out of the frame. In this case, go to dollar tree and buy a piece of foam board (white or black), then cut it to shape of the frame with an exacto knife and put it back in the frame. If you want, you can paint the foam board a preferred color. Otherwise, you can write directly on the board. Use paint pens (can get them at Michaels) and carefully free hand what you want to say on the sign. If you want decorations in the corner you can free hand them or use a stencil. We made TONS of signs this way and they look awesome! They were also way way way way way cheaper than buying signs that already exist. We also got to personalize it and give it our own personal touches. Hope this helps!

I found a couple groups on Facebook that resell the items they used at their weddings. It’s not all great but sometimes you can find stuff for a great price that was only used once.

I used Etsy for my welcome sign but DIY all the others. I just bought frames from Walmart and used Microsoft Word and my printer to do the rest lol.
