Mother of the Bride Dresses

HoundMama, on October 12, 2012 at 9:36 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25

My mom is having a tough time finding anything for the wedding. I am her only child and so she would really like to snazz it up for this, since this will be the only time she will get to be MOB. We have been to a few different bridal shops (David's included), but she's having a hard time finding something she really really likes. She's 70 years old so she's not wanting to look like a hot momma - more like a dignified momma - but she definitely wants some bling. Our experience so far with bridal shops has been that they don't have a whole lot to choose from. I am in the St. Louis area - she is in the Southeast Missouri area - does anyone have any suggestions locally? OR does anyone have any suggestions of designers we can look for in different shops? Where did your mom get her dress?

Thanks in advance!!!

I think your mom should check out department stores instead of bridal salons. Try Macy's, Dillards, and Nordstroms. Look especially online on these sites cuz they have way more stuff than in stores.

We are taking my mom shopping next weekend. Ours is more casual, but Nordstroms has a wedding shop if you have one out near you. Any department store really should have one that she can get something from.

Have you tried Ann Taylor or J Crew? They have some options too. You can always buy a sash or a brooch for her for her bling if you need to.

When I was looking for wedding dresses (I'm 50, 2nd marriage convalidation), I looked at MOB dresses b/c I thought they would be more suitable for my age.

I found this and really liked it.

I agree with checking out the upscale department stores. Talbot's is also a good store.

I'll second the department stores, both my mother and FMIL found their dresses there, and on sale so they were under $75.

Believe it or not, JC Penny's and Sears also have some dressier dresses. I used to play in a performance orchestra and needed something a little more dressy for concerts and I found my concert outfit at Sears.

I know that buying from China Wholesale Sites are suuuuper frowned upon, but my mother and MIL both bought their dresses from DH Gate and loved them! (MIL bought 3 and my mom bought 2 - they couldn't choose so they just bought what they wanted...and they didn't even know they were buying from the same site!)

My mom is 66 and MIL is...idk lol. Sorry for not-so-great pics, they were taken on MIL's camera.

Thanks for all the advice! We will definitely check out some dept. stores. Wherever we get it it's going to have be a physical purchase. My mom does not do the internet - she doesn't even have a computer! lol, bless her heart. Smiley smile

Dillards has a good selection. My MIL bought hers from Dillards website, but it did cost like $200. I did a little searching for my mother and found hers on Ebay for $50. It was the exact same designer as my MIL's and was brand new with tags. I kind of felt bad I didn't find the deal before my MIL bought hers.

There's a Von maur in lake St. Louis. They always have nice stuff. There's always a dress place in St. Louis mills mall you might try. I can't remember the name but they've always had a good selection cause all they sell is special occasion dresses

My mom actually got her dress from Davids Bridal. She tried on a couple of the MOB dresses and didn't like them so she tried on a BM dress and liked it and bought it ($99 too!!).

Like some of the others have said, try some of the department stores such as Dillards. I bought a dress to attend a wedding and I love it and it would be formal enough for a MOB dress.

This is the dress my mom ended up getting, she's going to add a shaw or something to cover her shoulders and a broach to the left hip. She ended up getting it in the royal blue (Horizon).

Hope she finds something she feels beautiful in!

A lot of these ladies have the right idea! Department stores!! My mom stops in once a month to look at everything and calls me regularly to tell me what she's found! They are starting to carry a lot more bridal! Best of luck to her! (o:

I agree with everyone with the department stores Smiley smile That's where we plan on finding my mothers and grandmothers dresses. For my fathers wedding she found a beautiful floral flowy dress at Sears!

My mom has really liked Nordstrom's. Do you have a Nordstrom Rack near you? You can sometimes get really lucky!

Dillard's also has a great dressy dept.

I found mine at Nordstrom (in the store, not online.) My ex-husbands wife bought hers from Nordstrom online.

The color of mine is actually closer to the second photo.

Department stores are great for trying on but if you plan on paying any kind of money you might not want something pre-tried on a thousand times and possibly stretched. I would definitely check out nordstroms or Macys and see what they have and what you like. If she wants dressy but dignified tell her to go in and view the Soulmates line. They are stunning and very regal, which seems to be what you're mom is hunting for. I work for French Novelty and have people call or order online all the time after going in a department store and trying on the line. Don't rule out online just yet, it may just be your bestfriend! But definitely get her trying things on. Best of luck!

I LOVE the idea of Nordstroms..they have that Bridal section. At least the one near me is wonderful. Dillards too is also great!! Macy's also has the sales plus the coupons...

WTH am I talking about...all of the above stores are great ideas. Good luck, I know I'll be going through the same thing with my mom.
