Mother of the Bride Wearing black??

Jen, on November 23, 2016 at 5:45 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 34

Hi Everyone,

My mother and I have been searching for her dress and we can across this beautiful dress, but it's in black with silver gems. It comes in other colors but the silver gems only come with the black or charcoal.

So now I pose the question, thoughts on a mother of the bride wearing black? She's nervous if she did end up going with it people would take offense?

I really don't think it matters...my mom wore navy blue and my MIL was going to wear black...she bought another dress last minute, but I was never concerned with their colour choices. I wouldn't stress over it. Nobody should be offended by that.

FMIL thought about wearing a black dress. Didn't bother me one bit, but her friends talked her out of it.

I love black and I'm kinda sad she didn't go with her original choice.

Uh, why would anyone be offended by that? That's weird.

My Mom is wearing a dress that is sheer black over brown. She was worried but I reminded her that all the guys will be in black tuxes and my BM's are wearing navy blue, so also a darker color. I think it's fine.

I wouldn't be offended, but I *would* think she was trying to register her disapproval of the marriage.

Seems overly sensitive to me. Black is a pretty darn standard color for nice dresses.

Some people just like black, if you get offended by it you're just too damn sensitive

I think those rules have kind of died out, except people still seem getbexcited about someone other than the bride wearing white. If she loves it, it's 100% fine.

Can we see a pic? I think it sounds like a great dress. If the silver is enough to balance it, I wouldn't think twice about it.

This is a know your family question. In my family, people would be horrified because black is for funerals and it would appear as if she was mourning the "loss" and didn't agree with the marriage. In FH's family, women often wear black to weddings.

IMO, charcoal would be better than black if she loves the dress and is worried about wearing black

I think black is very formal. Nothing wrong with it.

I had a coworker tell me that when a woman wears black to a wedding, it means that she does not approve of the marriage. However, I have seen black worn often (both for the BP and the MOB/MOG). My mom wore a black and white dress.

We had a formal, evening wedding, at a historic hotel. Most of the men wore black tuxedos and most of the women - including my MIL - wore a black gown or cocktail dress.

If people are offended about your mother's choice, I think they have a problem.

I personally don't see an issue with it. My mom wore black to my sister's wedding and looked amazing. My BIL's mom also wore black.

Not a big deal, in my opinion. My mom found a black dress and it looks fantastic so she's wearing it.

My stepmother wore a black dress to my sisters wedding a few years ago and will be wearing one to mine as well. She looks great in the pictures and it's her favorite color to wear so we don't care Smiley smile

Also, who doesn't love some sparkle on a dress?!

Also no one bats an eye if a man wears black to a wedding, same thing they wear to a funeral.

Let her rock that black dress! Anyone who gets offended can fuck off. It's just a dress, and black is honestly much more formal in my opinion than other colors.

My moms first statement after getting engaged " you know I'm wearing black right?"

My moms everyday wardrobe consists of black, navy, white and more black.

We went together Friday to get her dress. It's black. And it's gorgeous. It's what she is most comfortable in so who cares.
