Mother of the Bride

I want my mother to be happy and comfortable and feel beautiful on my wedding day, but she is so difficult to shop for or with, and I have no idea where to go to help her with dress, hair, makeup, etc.

She does have some stress-induced facial eczema, her hair is brittle from 30-plus years of perms, and she can't wear a lot of eye makeup as she has had multiple eye surgeries. She is about a size 14-16, although she thinks she is much bigger, and she doesn't like tight, restrictive clothing. Her usual beauty routine is no frills, so I don't want her to be uncomfortable with too much stuff. Bottom line is she really lacks self-confidence and doesn't like the way she looks.

Any other brides with this problem, and how can I help her? She is such an amazing woman, and I just want her happy.

I'd look for more modest outfits to start. My mother lost nearly 100 pounds over the years and is still so insanely self conscious, I find things with sleeves and darker colors make her more comfortable. Also in my opinion the more modest mother of the bride dresses just seem better tailored. I think having her wear something comfortable will be the first step then worry about hair and make up.

My mom is somewhat the same. She told me she wants to fade into the background. I told her no, I want you to stand out. My mom is bit larger probably 16, and she has psoriasis which cause her to have white flakes on her head if she scratches it. The first thing I did was book the person who normally does our hair, because we both go to the same salon and I know my mom will feel more comfortable with her doing her hair. The issue I am running into now is that because of psoriasis my mom doesn't like to wear dark colors which I understand, but it's hard to find a lighter colored dress in her size because so many are darker in color since darker colors are supposed to be more slimming. Even though my wedding is over a year away we are going to start looking now. I'm hoping we get lucky! Good luck!!!

Thanks Kelsey! I wish I could take her to her own hairdresser, but since the wedding is in Orlando, and she lives in Jacksonville, I think it will probably be good to find a stylist down here and do a couple visits before the wedding, so she feels comfortable.

Congratulations on your wedding, and good luck with everything!

Yeah, she already said she won't wear anything form fitting, but I'm not so concerned with style, I just want her happy. Thanks so much, and congratulations!
