Mother-son songs -- for mother of the bride and groom?

Melissa, on August 11, 2022 at 2:37 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

I feel like I need to give some really brief backstory to explain this, so I apologize. So my fiancé and all his siblings have a really bad relationship with their mother. She did a lot of not great things to them. Their step dad and oldest sister more or less was the one that taught them everything they needed to know to be wonderful human beings. I love all his siblings that I've met so far (there's a lot between the blended family and his mom's life style). ANYWAY, he's only known my mom as long as he's known me so it's only been a few years. He's still adapting to having a good relationship with a mother figure. My folks are always there for both of us and treat him like a son.

But here's my issue. I'm trying really hard to figure out a good mother/son song and a lot of them have all these lyrics about watching the child grow and all that. I feel like given the context, and the fact he'd have to dance with my mom, that might be a little weird. Is there something more generic that is kind of an "I'll be there" type of song that doesn't sound like it's exclusively between romantic partners (other than The Four Tops, seems to upbeat). I guess I put a lot of thought into the lyrics of songs that are going to be "showcased" dances for a reception lol.

The other option is to leave the mother/son dance out entirely if that's what he decides he wants. He's still thinking about it.

Thanks everyone!

Edit: I should probably add, types of genres would probably be classic rock, Motown, some R&B, pop, ect. For some of the other songs on our lists, I have Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, Marvin Gaye, Mark Ronson, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Grover Washington Jr. No Rap. No raunchy lyrics. Trying to consider the audience. Hope that helps kinda?

This is a hard one! I'm not sure what type of music you're looking for, but try this link: 81 Best Mother-Son Dance Songs for Your Wedding (brides.com)

It has little excerpts of the lyrics so you can immediately see if it's too lovey for their relationship!

I'm going to listen through more, but I'll Say A Little Prayer by Aretha Franklin fits my mom so well. I don't know how easy it would be for them to dance to, but my mom always does that. She has a prayer list in her bathroom she goes through every morning when she's getting ready lol.

You could try Jason Mraz's "93 Million Miles"?

Also, just a thought - could he dance with his eldest sister instead of his mom? Since she was there for him growing up, it seems like a natural fit. (FWIW, my dad passed before my wedding, and so was unavailable to dance - I danced with my brother)

Well, it's up to him if he wants to dance with your mom at all (as you said) and there won't be anything wrong with choosing not to. But if he does, I would just have him pick any non-romantic song he likes to dance to, without worrying about whether or not the lyrics perfectly reflect his relationship with your mom. There's no need for the song to describe or announce anything; it can just be a nice song.

I've actually never been to a wedding that's had a mother-son dance, so if he isn't too sure about it, I don't think anyone will notice if you don't have one. It is sweet that both he and your mom are considering it, though!

I would say that would be a good idea, but he would never go for it lol. Actually I can only think of one of his sisters that would. They've maintained the childhood sibling rivalry about touchy feelies woth each other, but they will be that way with other people lol. I think that's a super sweet idea though!
