Movie Themed Centerpieces

Jacki, on June 11, 2012 at 1:08 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

Hey there! So FH and i have accidentally given our wedding a movie theme- lol! each table name will be a movie title instead of a number. We were thinking that instead of doing a traditional floral centerpiece, we would do something movie related. we are thinking something along the lines of a "date night" centerpiece; that way who ever wins it, might actually want it. hahaha

Like a popcorn bucket, a couple bags of microwave popcorn, candy, and (if we can find them cheap enough, the movie that is the name of the table). Does this sound tacky, crazy, or doable? I keep going back and forth on how to make this actually look good....

It sounds fun in theory, but i'm afraid it will look silly. I saw on google a popcorn bucket with yellow hydrangeas, so it looked like popcorn... but we're trying to avoid using flowers..

Sorry for the long ramble... it's just that kind of monday for me... haha

I like the idea of doing the movie names for tables but not so into the idea of using popcorn, candy and all those things etc. I think it will take away from the elegance of your wedding, unless you plan on your wedding being very casual.

It is semi-casual... not like jeans and a t shirt casual, but we're not talking white gloves and top hats, either.... lol

I want some kind of non-traditional centerpiece, so we're trying to stay as far away from flowers as possible. But we're having such a hard time thinking of anything that will look nice, that's isn't floral, or a candle sitting on top of a mirror... Smiley sad a friend suggested the bucket, movie etc., and we have yet to come up with anything to top it...

Personally I think you can do it! It could look tacky but if you do it right, it could look great! And it all depends on your vision. If you want casual, then you can do casual centerpieces. Forget what others think about it- just don't mix and match stuff like a glam ballroom with these centerpieces- that's where you will get in trouble if they seem out of place. If all your elements are on the same page, it will look great!

Gotcha, well idk I guess I'd have to see exactly what you mean. Like Jamie said it could be done, but I imagine it would have to cost a little more to have those items not look tacky, if that makes sense?

I agree with Rebecca… unless you're having a casual event, stay away from popcorn centerpieces.

Ideas that could work: Escort Cards that look like movie tickets (admit one - table 2 instead of theater 2), popcorn at cocktail hour, Blow up an engagement photo and make it look like a movie poster. Same concept could be used for Save the Dates… Do a movie poster concept and say "opening 4.13.13". Get red velvet ropes leading up to the front entrance of your reception. Make it more of an opening night, or premier night thing. If you do a candy bar, or even just favors, use typical movie theater candy (sour patch kids, snowdrops, red vines, starburst, etc). The guest book can be designed after the Star Walk of Fame in Hollywood. Each page could have a Star where the guests can write their name & leave a note for you. See if the servers can wear traditional old school theater uniforms (red jackets & the little hat). If you don't have a venue yet, you could always rent a theater.

@ Jamie: Thanks! and you're right; as long as it fits with everything else, i don't think it'll be tacky

@Stephanie: I'm going to try and do a trial centerpiece soon (by the end of the month, i think) and i'll post it here. If it looks good, feel free to borrow some ideas Smiley winking haha or if you think of something else "movie related," let me know! Smiley smile

This website had some cool things on it, like rolls of film, film cans, etc which you could pair with a framed still from a movie that the table was named after or something. If you do a little more searching, you could probably find things cheaper too if you buy more in bulk! Good luck, I know it can look cool!

I like the idea of using movie pop-corn buckets but filling them w/some small yellow flowers to put inside it- so that way it'll be remensicent of popcorn, but more elegant than the actual popcorn. While still giving you that unique feeling and not using the normal glass vases and floral combo. Alternate between tables w/3 dif sized slim glass vases and fill w/jelly beans or snow-caps or some small candy (depending on your colors, you could even get 1 or 2 colors of jelly bellies or M&M's to coordinate them w/your wedding colors) and put a taper flame-less candle in them to illuminate the candied vases.... Do small frames on the table tops w/little replicas of the movie posters or dvd covers... it can be done. You'll just have to try some mock up to figure out what works best.

I don't really live the idea of popcorn- but i think stacked movie reels or film in a vase would be pretty.

Glowing pictures, you could have your table number on one of the sides

It kinda reminds me of the light shining threw the film strips.

I went to a two weddings recently where they had really interesting centerpiences. One was a Philadelphia themed wedding and they had philly soft pretzels candy and other things that realted to Philly in the middle of the table. The other wedding was at the Philadelphia Philles Stadium...they had a range of centerpieces...some were craker jack boxes some were peanuts in vases, some were miniature phillies bats. it was really cool. I think the movie theme could be awesome!

Hayley- off topic sorta, but i love that idea, but have never found frames that will work. Have you ever seen any/ know how to make a normal frame look good?

Well, I thought about doing a soundtrack, for the guest to have as a wedding favor. The soundtrack would be the songs that we used during the wedding and reception. But, CD's aren't exactly popular anymore.

And where the guestbook thing is, what we will have as the guestbook, idk, but have a sign or something that says "autographs"
