Moving Truck for diy Wedding Decor

Sara, on March 19, 2021 at 1:31 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 16

Hi all,

My fiancé and I live in LA and are getting married in San Diego (about a 2 hour drive). We will be bringing most of our own decor, from the arch down to the napkins. We are planning on renting a moving truck for all of the stuff we are bringing. We originally planned on dropping off the truck near our venue on Friday, moving it to the venue Sunday morning (the day of the wedding) and then leaving it overnight and picking it up the next day on the way home. However, we recently found out our venue is not going to allow overnight parking. This means we will need to find a way to pack up the truck and drive it somewhere after the wedding is over.

To be honest, I don't know what kind of answers I am seeking here. Who? Where? How? I guess I am just wondering if any of y'all have done something like this. Any words of advice or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

-Sara

P.s. Yes, I know this is unnecessarily complicated. I don't want to go into what kind of low budget, COVID postponement madness led us here. I am just trying to make it work. Thanks Smiley smile

Hi Sara - Are you using a day of coordinator? If so they might have people that you can hire that will break down everything and pack it into the truck when your wedding is done. I’d say for probably $25-$30 an hour. Your venue might also have a list of people that they’ve worked with for event set up and break down. So definitely check with them. The cheapest thing would probably to have a group of friends or family members that will volunteer to break down everything and pack up the truck. You can get them a thank you gift or a bottle of nice wine or something as a thank you gift. But I’d say it’d probably much easier to hire someone to do this for you. Hope that helps!

Can you park the truck wherever you're staying?

I’d ask the hotel your staying at if you can park your truck there.

Hi Sara, the moving truck is smart. I remember before our wedding our stuff JUST fit into our cars and largely due to my now husband’s amazing packing skills! If a coordinator is not possible, I would ask/delegate for guests to grab one item on their way out to put in the truck. I have tons of girl cousins and we do that for each other’s weddings. If you have a florist, mine also did a majority of the breakdown for us and worth asking.
On a side note, amazes me some of these venues really make it hard for the bride/groom. It’s like really they can’t make an exception one time to help out a covid bride who I’m sure has been through enough? My venue had rules like that too and I find it rather cold and uncompassionate. Good luck girlie ❤️

Party in the truck boom!!! Just kidding! I use to live in San Diego so I’m sure the wedding is going to be somewhere beautiful!! Does your budget allow you to rent out a space at a local camp ground or somewhere that has those accommodations?

If you have a coordinator they can break down and pack up after your event. My parents and a few guests stayed to help mine pack up everything.
She packed a little as she went like napkins and chargers after dinner was over. She cleaned up cocktail hr once we moved to the reception area etc. I don’t remember them saying it took too long.

Oh and I was a bridesmaid for a friends wedding and she had the bridal party help move tables at the end of the night.

Thanks for all of the advice everyone! I am not as concerned about the packing up part. We definitely have a plan in place for that with the Day Of and some lovely friends who have volunteered. I am more concerned about the driving the truck off the lot part. It feels like a big ask to put a guest in charge of it (especially since they wouldn't be able to drink).

I will ask our Day Of to see if she can hire someone to drive it away for us. Thank you!

Omg too funny! We’re renting a uhaul as well for a wedding 2 hours away. I was all prepared to leave the truck in the parking lot overnight as well and pick it up the next day. I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’s okay with the venue and will cross that bridge when I come to it.

Can you park it at a local guest's place for the night? You could also have someone underage possible drive it away (since they won't be drinking). I can tell you sound a little frustrated. I really hope you find a solution.

I wonder if the venue's insurance won't cover your property and the rental truck if it is left overnight.
Could be a liability issue for them .
