MsShay - TTC NFP Answers

Ok, so here is what I remember and if you PM me your email address I can send you a scan of some instructions I have.

First you start with charting your cycle. You want to have a three space section for each day and you want different color stickers (lets use red, green, and white for examples). So for each day you will have a space for the date, a space for the vaginal secretion of that day, and a space for the sticker thats color coded for that day.

For days when you have your period, use a red sticker and put "menstration" for the vaginal secretion. THe beginning of most women's ovulation cycle starts shorting after the menstration stops. For most women the MOST fertile time is the time directly after the menstration cycle. The Dr. who taught this class said that she suggests have sex every day during the time frame (if possible) for couples TTC.

What you are looking for is that your body secretions will progress from (at the vulva only) dry (infertile and green sticker)

Progress from dry to sticky (white) and then to slippery (white w/a drawn baby pic). After a period of time you will notice what your peak day is. That is the day that your ovalation starts. Once your ovlation hits, you have 3-4 days before you are no longer fertile. You stop being fertile until your period starts and the ovulation starts again.

Whew! Not sure if it covered everything, but I would totally reccommend that you take the class.

Ummm...I gotta say your teacher is leaving out a LOT and not giving you the most accurate way to track ovulation and fertility at all!! Wow, if I had gone by this I never would have known when I ovulated because my cervical mucus never showed the changes that some women get...and so many women I know ovulate like 20 days after there period, or just a couple of days after it......I'm surprised they didn't give you more accurate info!! @his better half, I know you've been frustrated TTC and want to hurry up the process so I suggest checking out the free online lessons on fertilityfriend.com...they send you one lesson a day so it's not too overwhelming all at once and you can use their site to chart, their software does most of the work for you..

@Laura - there is a lot more stuff but thats what I can remember off the top of my head. There is an instruction sheet that I need to scan for MsShay but its at home (sorry!)

But I have to admit that the only way to learn certain things were all based on the cervical mucus and the changes that it goes through. Maybe you're using a different method? She told me that she really couldn't help me until I get off of BC (tried to be a little pushy about it, too) but I've been on BC since 16 due to other issues. I would want to talk to my OB-GYN before I just jump off.

Cervical mucus is ONE aspect of fertility charting,it gives you one clue to the puzzle. But many women get multiple patches of fertile mucus throughout their cycle and some don't get any (like me) So it's hard to really pinpoint ovulation by ONLY using cervical mucus. I think it's actually the rare woman who gets it right at ovulation only like clockwork each month. I'm sure tracking it is better than nothing, but it would by no means be an accurate method by itself. I certainly wouldn't rely on it for BC! LOL she is right that you won't be able to track this stuff while on BC because you don't ovulate on BC. I was on it for like 13 years myself, also for medical reasons, and I definitely had to get to know my body all over again when I went off it. I'm sure you will too. But still don't go off of it until you're ready!! I used charting as my method, but I charted cervical mucus, basal body temperatures, ovulation testing kits, cervical texture, and cervical position all in combination

Oh, wow. that's a lot. Well, unless I missed something (I don't think I did), this method is solely on mucus. The idea is that once you figure out your peak day - wait 4 days then you're infertile. For all the days before that you would only have sex every other day so that you can check your mucus without seminal fluid being in the way (but I didn't mention that to MsShay since she's TTC). They have a "1,2,3 wait and see" method for people who have patches of fertility during the time prior to and after ovulation. THe problem with that is that some women never have a totally infertile part of their cycle - so for those women the method reccommends only having sex every other day, period. FS was like "WHAT??! Forever?" LOL

YOu know, with a 28 day cycle and you take 5 days for menstration and then half the rest, you're looking at 11 days a month with sex only :-(

There is this site called www.mymonthlycycles.com, it basically allows you to track your cycle monthly for free. I've been using it for a while now. It's pretty easy to follow, and it basically tells you when your ovulation days.

    Thanks for the info everyone.

@Laura, I know that you had a hard time so all of this is huge to you BUT since we're just starting although I would like to accomplish the mission before he leaves on deployment, we want to takeit a step at a time. We tried the "Just do it" method (as he calls it hehe). Now I want to pay more attention to CM and see how that works out. Starting in August I'll be using opks. And in September I'll add on temping. Temping seems to take alot of effort. I'm active duty military and so is DH. Dealing with kids, work, etc I'm usually not able to remember to do ANYTHING at the same time everyday so trying to take my basal body temp is going to be hard which is why it's the last thing I want to start. I have known of ppl doing it solely by CM tho. I guess I'll just have to cross my fingers (not my legs ;-) and see how it goes. How long did it take you?

@Kay, I'm going to check out that website as soon as I get home from my post op appt today. Thanks so much

@Unique, we're in this together :-) Btw, which techniques are you working on?

This is actually becoming pretty depressing. Having my son and daughter was so easy a caveman can do it. Ugh! Now I want more and I just have a weird feeling it's going to be a struggle. Not to mention I keep having symptoms but they're because of other stuff. For example, the pain meds from my surgery cause nausea, the anti-nausea meds make me sleepy, and being depressed about being stuck in the house makes me cranky. SO now everyone keeps mentioning pregnancy although none of them know how much it hurts me to hear it. It also doesn't help that those who do know we're trying keep asking "Are you prego yet?" OM effin G!

LOl @ Libragurl - yeah, NFP = Natural Family Planning. I was required to take the class as part of Pre-cana. Andre calls NFP the "Lets have a baby" method, lol. So I thought I'd pass some info along.
